Wintry January 3rd-6th, 2018 Winter Storm The ARCC/Xtreme Weather Special

I am literally dead in the middle of that hole in SE Wake. Is it coming together at all? It can’t remain stationary. I mean everything is moving.

The dry slot was intensifying for a while but the banding around us has since re-intensified and there's 30 dBz over Apex slowly moving east towards Raleigh. I guess we could still squeak out an inch or two if we get the heck out of this snow hole

Western edge is catching up with the coast quickly in the last few frames of my radar....

Dang this is surely one tough snow hole.

We'd probably have 4 inches now if it wasn't for all the virga. It's snowing like crazy in Sanford.

I agree, we could have easily ended up well inside the 4-8" if this storm had a uniform precipitation shield extending back to the Triad and Charlotte. We likely wasted a few tenths of an inch of QPF (or more) on moistening the low-mid levels. At least in January 2000 we had a few storms before the big dog that pre-conditioned the atmosphere and at least provided a source of moisture in the boundary layer (sublimation of snow from pre-existing snow cover on the ground) to reduce the impacts of this snow hole

Already got a dusting on the ground here in Apex. Snowing pretty hard here.

sorry, but that dry slot on the radar is hilarious... can't help myself..

6" has fallen in Pinehurst now with several inches completely covering the roads, the snow that fell stuck to the road just as easily as the ground

Congrats to all who got or are getting snow. I feel the pain of so many of you. I can remember a few storms in recent memory that we just knew we were going to get nailed only to get nothing but maybe a few token flakes. For snow lovers, nothing is more frustrating than that. What an amazing storm though, north Florida through Savannah and Charleston with snow.
For those of us in north Georgia, this was never predicted for us at all, so it was not a "screw job" so it is easy to at least be proud for those who did get snow, especially those in north FL and southeast GA!

And Webber and 1300m ... my hat is off to both you both, and some others around here, who were on this one. You chose the perfect career path!
