Wintry Jan 23-27 Winter Storm Obs

Idk if it’s 32 or 33 and if stuff is melting or sticking but I’m glad I got to see frozen weather with no lasting issues. It’s still falling lightly all I want is something pretty in the morning and to reel in next week after attempting to avoid model watching for a few days. But we all know that won’t happen for any of us.

The most stressful track of my 20 years doing this. Bar none. A week of sleep loss I’ll never get back. Had that high pressure been a tick weaker or in a different position or that 50/50 had slid out just a skosh early we’d all be singing a different tune right now. The data said prepare for impact and it was undeniable. For once, something went our way.

I literally just said the same thing to the Wife LoL....and that we were so close to this being a complete disaster for more folks than it was by just a few degrees

The sleet lasting about 6 hours longer overnight and into the morning absolutely saved me. I was around 0.15” going into that final band. I got 2.5x that amount in 2 1/2 hours just from that band. I didn’t measure the sleet but I had to have had at least 1” of it or just over that amount. Flip that liquid from sleet to ZR and I would’ve been pushing 0.5” before that last band came through. The 925’s being as cold as they were absolutely saved us this time

Maybe banter, but anyone have thoughts about driving from Sunset Beach up 74 to Charlotte tomorrow AM? Thinking it should be OK with temps getting above freezing and the sun doing its work?

Temp maxed out just over 30 here but down back into 20s now. Estimating 3/4” IP and .15” ZR. If it wasn’t for the frigid temps all day this would be a non event but with cold ground and air it was definitely high impact from travel perspective. Great sledding and the kids had fun sun up till sun down

28/26 here in Lewisville. It is such a relief to not have that ZR hanging over our heads and to be able to enjoy the night with power.
We really dodged a bullet today. Had some light snow mixing in at the end as I was trying to shovel a path through the deck. Everything has a solid crust on top from that ZR mixing in at the end. The dog (pictured left) was not happy with the icy crust on top during the trip outside tonight. Final numbers here are:

IP/SN - 2.5"
ZR ~ 0.1"

It's going to take a while for this pile of sleet to go away. I'm thinking March ...
