Pattern Jammin January 2024

Yeah... I'm feeling like whatever else happens this winter it ain't topping the last 10 days on cold at least... 6 out of 8 days below freezing with a high of 6 14 and 20 three days in a row. I'm still seeing snow and icy patches from last Sunday too which was apparently the 12th coldest day on record here. Yeah.... Good luck topping that ?

The only thing that might be topped is the snow I mean it only snowed an inch. Very similar to Christmas 22
Yeah it’s extremely unlikely we top a 7 inch snow agin this winter. We’ve been lucky But that would be next level lucky.

Already back down to 33 after reaching 39 for a high. Dewpoint is still at 9 so with the clear skies and light winds, it should easily get down to about the mid teens tonight. Three straight nights at 18 or lower here is always impressive… the only other time it’s happened since I moved here was early January 2018

It never gets that cold here thanks to the mountains.

I remember one time as a kid (70’s or early 80’s) we had some afternoon single digits with Sunshine. It was true bitter cold.

I’ve looked at some of observations during the 1979 President’s Day Storm and GSO had temps in the single digits during the afternoon while that storm was going on… that’s impressive enough. Also pretty much the whole NC Piedmont had afternoon temperatures in the single digits on 1/20/1985, but most areas had highs in the 30s at midnight before that Arctic front came through with a burst of snow.

I live in the extreme part of NW SC.
I'd like to know how flurries for 30 mins in Dec of 22 right before Christmas got that shaded in like that.
It should still be essentially 0%.

May be wrong,
This is off the top of my head,
So could be wrong.
76-77, 77-78, 79-80, 82-83, 84-85, 89-90,
Could be windows of what this original poster was remembering.
All had very long duration cold snaps that might meet that criteria at one time in those winters.
Great times.
Banter winters...

I know that growing up Concord, 1985 is the one I remember… it was a Sunday and temperatures were in the low 30s when we went in to church. When we came out a couple hours later, it was snowing and temps were in the low teens… the snow was just blowing around in the road and not really sticking to them.

We had one of those in 2014 with the first event. The snow was blowing across the road like you’d see sand on old NC 12 through Rodanthe

That was my favorite snowstorm ever. As impressive as those temps were, I think the afternoon temps on a sunny day in single digits is more impressive temp wise.

Absolutely. I wonder if any of those days you’re remembering had a significant snowpack. I was only 2 years old during the ‘79 storm so have no memory of it. I am big NASCAR fan who grew just a couple miles from Charlotte Motor Speedway, so I’m well aware of the importance that storm had on the huge increase of popularity nationally NASCAR got because of it.

No snow cover at the time.
