Misc General Banter Thread

So in discussions with AI today it educated me on there being five difference classes of weather station quality. Class 1 being the best and 5 the worst respectively. KATL and KPDK are both class 5, and KFCC in Peachtree City being 1 or 2. The begs the question why any class 5 station would be used for official readings. I also came across this site from the University of Georgia which has links to weather stations across the state.

UGA Weather Network
That site is great for soil temps in the winter time.

I’ve never even ridden by a Buccee’s much less visit one. I heard from friends that if you must go the bathroom on the road, this is a must due to how serious they take cleanliness. Maybe that’s why so many stop there and cause bottlenecks? I also heard their BBQ brisket is delish.

Can others here confirm these two things?

@Tarheel1
I have been to the one in Sevierville TN and one in KY! The brisket and pulled pork bbq, I’d put up against anybody’s!
The restrooms have attendants, and are amazingly clean! They pay their employees very well , as they have the pay scale and positions posted everywhere! Plus the 100+ gas pumps and no 18 wheelers allowed! It’s a great place to check out! 10/10

It's basically a twist on South of The Border from 40 years ago packed under 1 roof. Not a fan of Texas food so can't comment on the brisket. The breakfast burritos are okay though.

Their retention is horrific despite the pay. Never really figured out why.

Received this in the mail today, and looked online for what this is. Sure enough they used ------- AI.

Coaching kids on how to ride bikes in middle Georgia right now....disgusting heat. Charlotte is hot...but the corridor from Fayetteville-Columbia- Augusta over to central Georgia is just next level heat. Coastal Plain....too.
There is a rest stop on 16 that is usually our first stop on the way to St Simons and it is a slap in the face every time you open the car door. There is something different even if it is just a few degrees away from home.

Was digging through some archives looking for Hurricane Floyd stuff and came across some winter satellite photos from 1999/2000. It's wild how brown the east coast used to get in winter. The resolution isn't quite what we have now but it's close enough to see how much less sprawl there was. Some of the change is the proliferation of pine plantations in the last 30 years and some is the desire for cool season green grass in lots of places. This was 12/3/2000. https://archive.org/details/VE-IMG-1512

One of the houses that we are looking at tomorrow has apparently AI enhanced the image from the last ownership. Basically removed the soap container and slapped on a watermark. And of course, they used AI.

only people posting right now are disciplined enough to not fall for homegrown slop 8 days out in an ell nino
There's nothing else to fall for lol...homegrown slop is all we're gonna get it looks like.

I know its a little early but are we running back the Fantasy League this year? If so I would like to be in it again.
Count me in again too! I think a twelve team league would be nice. The last two years we have had ten and fourteen teams. In a fourteen team league, replacements are hard to find if injuries wreck your roster. The ten team league made things too easy as far as finding replacement talent.

They even removed the toilet paper!

Food update from south Grand Strand, SC. Got to Lee's Inlet Kitchen for the first time in a decade--hush puppies still legit. Fried fantail shrimp is spectacular. A little on the pricey side, but everything is down there so whatever.

Tried Wahoo's Fish House on the inlet and was quite impressed (next to the infamous Drunken Jack's). Food and view is great. I think the name is kinda silly, but just my opinion.

Honorable mention: Conch Cafe on the beach Surfside/Garden City is a great lunch spot if you're ever over there. Love the porch setup and there's always a breeze so it never feels too hot.

TIL that the WR-120DSP stands for Digital Stock Pack. I bought mine directly from Midland on Amazon. I do know that the sounds are different than the WR-120EZ that I had 11 years ago.

Also, the origin of red lights come from the fact that the radio shows a red light when a SVR, TOR, or FFW gets issued by NWS RAH.

Fully understanding the economic and safety benefits of improved weather modeling, I can't help feeling a little aggravated that, little by little, some of the fun of being a weather hobbyist is lost as uncertainty decreases. At least we'll always have the ten-day GFS :)

Definitely possible, although not seeing it in the near term, and climo starts to turn against the possibility as we get deeper into August, so I’d say the odds strongly lean against it. However, as 2019 showed, it can apparently hit triple digits here as late as early October. 🤷‍♂️
yknow you try to not get emotional about the weather since you have zero control over it, but man october 2019 was so stupid

I think the entire year of 2019 was stupid. Officially registered 0.0'' snowfall at RDU for the calendar year!

Did get 8-9'' in Dec 2018 though so that winter wasn't a total bust, but still...

had such a good streak going of not hearing about that disaster

Been really impressed with WeatherFront website here the past few days. Looks super clean. Might consider dropping Weatherbell in favor of it this winter as the model stuff is really nice too and seems like they are adding things.

It feels a lot cleaner and I've only used the darn thing for a few minutes compared to WB for many months.

Here is another improvement -
