Everybody’s different, but I’ve never minded mountain driving even though I do it rarely. Much rather do that than drive on a SoCal highway, that’s for sure.

I'm actually going to thank you a bit later for noting 64 west out of Cashiers. I spent too much time a couple months back gawking at the scenery to realize that this is a bit of a tricky road, and yet I've considered heading this way anyway on the way out to hit some sites in North GA and might still do it.

I'm going to probably have to scratch my initial idea, and I was already thinking on that this morning. I'll look again, but I think 178 has no scenery and is an annoying road. 64 does though and has the optionality of Whiteside Mountain if I wanted to hit it again.

Edit: For as much as I've talked about North Carolina on occasion in real life (this was especially a thing when I was a teen), I've actually only been to the state as a destination 4 times (I've passed through a couple other times). This is going to be the 5th time, and 3rd time to the same general area. One of my few longer than 2 night trips as a teen (haven't done too many longer trips since then) led to me talking about the Cullowhee area CONSTANTLY (thought we were more in the Cashiers area when I was 14, but I think it was Cullowhee instead as the drive was long and I think we passed by a college).

We ramp up pretty good in August/September *IF* we get tropical weather coming through to get us to our ~45-50" annual average. It's a slightly drier climate here east of the Appalachians otherwise since we're so far from the Gulf and don't get much from it.

It’s a great area. I’ve been over there about as many times as you have and the scenery made quite an impression on me. The college in Cullowhee is Western Carolina. I remember passing by it and thinking I should have gone there back in the day cause of the mountain scenery.

Mountain driving is different, but at least it’s more interesting. Certainly more than driving Coastal Plain roads in my opinion, which tend to look the same no matter what state you’re in. Flat flat flat. Oh here’s some swamp? LOL. And that’s no offense to the coastal plain/tidewater folk on here, just my honest opinion.

Anyone else having issue loading weather.gov and other related sites? None will load on my phone or my computer, which isn't quite fun when there are severe warned storms near me in Maine! I have Radar Scope which will works great, I just like to have multiple options!

I can’t load my forecast at all there. Only just noticed it being an issue as I was gone to the lake/northeastern parts of the CSRA for a while.

It’s not Colorado, but unless something changes in the lengthier range, I’m going to end up very grateful I planned to go back to SW NC in mid July and wishing I made it longer.

Actually, I hope the heat backs off just a bit. As I’d prefer those mid 80’s at around at least 3500 feet to be more like low 80’s at most.
 
Any insight as to why GSP doesn’t put warnings up as much a RAH? I’ve noticed the same forecasts as a county over with similar results. While those counties have watches/warnings , we don’t.
 
I’ve learned that any location with “horse” in the name, whether in Canada or the U.S., seems to be amazingly wintry:

-Deadhorse in Alaska

-Whitehorse in Yukon, Canada

-Darkhorse Lake in Montana just got major snow the last 2 days

-Hungry Horse, MT

I haven’t noticed it, but that doesn’t mean there’s not a difference. Are you talking severe or flood or all Watches/Warnings in general?

I believe Severe/Tornado Watches are handled entirely by the SPC. (if that's incorrect, someone please let me know)

In other news the water restrictions came down like a hammer today locally. The entire Pee Dee/Yadkin basin is in such bad shape. Yankees are having a fit over not being able to water their precious grass. 💀

Watched the end of Paraguay upsetting Germany and Morocco over Netherlands. Both went into penalty kicks. Crazy tension when it goes to the tiebreaker.

Paraguay doesn't look like the same team the US played game 1 BTW.

No opinion on the US/Bosnia outcome. I get nervous with these teams that aren't favored but have nothing to lose. (Paraguay being a textbook example)

Thing that we can say with the US is that they probably went further than everyone anticipated already.

Since I like to ramble about plans, my idea to go tubing in Rosman, NC, has changed to at the very least attempting a visit to Lake Jocassee on the way to Cashiers to position to go to Gorges State Park for my full day in NC. I had already thought about visiting the Jocassee wilderness area before it ended up turning into Gorges State Park during the pandemic year. It was a nice trip, but my usual restrictions while being alongside dad meant the only waterfall I saw was Whitewater Falls.

I do wonder if whether this is too ambitious of an idea though (or if whether it would just be a better idea to go on Tuesday and come back home through rural SC), while the lake looks great and the idea of photographing it again from the NC side seems like a wonderful idea to me, the best stuff on it takes a long boat ride. Maybe I could try paddleboarding (while sitting down probably) or find a spot to rent tubes from.

Unless you count the area/state park that's directly north on the NC side, then no lol. There's a reason why I've rambled a little on this trip as I've wondered if whether I could possibly receive some tips.

Sadly, while I did look, I'd probably save the boat tour for another time ha. I paid too much for a hotel already (then again there was absolutely no cell service around Mt. Toxaway Motel and their wifi was kinda trash, so maybe it was a price I had to pay as I'm staying somewhere else closer to Cashiers).

The only real question I have I guess would be is a two-car convoy (still on the idea that I'll drive) be at risk of being turned back at the Devils Fork State Park entrance on an early Sunday afternoon? I have others about the possibility of being able to just rent something to float in in the water, but I could possibly figure it out when I get there.

That entire general area from Jocassee/Gorges is pretty incredible btw. There is a lot of very scenic stuff not reachable outside of if you are excellent at wilderness hiking. But there's pictures all over the place (see Windy Falls).

Jocassee is one of the best things in our region. The opening scene in Deliverance is supposed to be Carters Lake, GA where I actually keep my boat, but it was already to far along. So the scene you see them blasting is actually Jocassee, also the scenes in the end of them filling a lake. The town is Sylva, not that it is relevant here. Sometimes I camp up there with my boat immediately after Memorial Day since I've already drug it to Lake Hartwell for the weekend.

The thing that makes it so unique is the fact that at only 1100' or so it butts right up against the ridge that Cashiers sits on, so that explains the view in the backround.

You should be fine with regular vehicles, but the boat ramp is pretty jam packed on the weekends, especially in the afternoon. Devils Fork has plenty of room to do what you want.

I believe I did already figure out that my best idea would be to go and go in at Eclectic Sun Paddlesports. Maybe I'll try out paddleboarding, but if I do, I'll be sitting down since I'm clumsy, so probably, I won't and the 3 of us will get tubes.

Now the only question will be how early I can get going. That's been getting easier and easier though lately.
