There will be Helene like power outages where the worst freezing rain hits. Possibly worse.

I would equate 1/2 inch of ice accretion to about the same power outages that we saw in the upstate from Helene. My two cents

In 2005 I only had 3/10ths ice accretion and went 8 days without power

Ice isn’t as fun as you think. Sounds fun and cool until you lose power. When your house is 34 degrees you won’t be posting selfies I promise you that.

Power outages will be Helene-like in areas. Extensive damage. The Aiken/Augusta 2014 event gave us 1.2 inches of ice. It was weeks before some had power back (and it was obviously freezing). You'll hear the cracking all around. Sleep on the first floor or under a stairway if you have major pines around. Tree's will be coming down.

Look up stories from 2021 power outage disaster in Texas. Estimated 500-1000 deaths with estimated $150 billions in damages.

The last major ice storm I remember I was a kid, Jan 2000 here in ATL. That sucked. I remember losing power for days. House thermostat read like 40°.
 
A lot of central NC hasn’t seen a major ice storm in over a decade (longer for some), either. Going to be a lot of weak trees that will be culled in a way that might’ve not happened had this happened a few years after the December 2002 ice storm.
 
I didn't have power for over a week in Durham after the 2002 storm. Dad drove to Hickory to find a generator. I remember having to go back to school before I got power again. Less than 1/2 a mile away.

No model is predicting 2-3” ice accumulations in ATL. Don’t forget to cut ZR amounts by ~50% to estimate how much would accrue on branches. So, their 4/10 ice is equivalent to ~0.8” ZR.
Power starts going out at ~0.25” ice and rapidly increases as it gets to 0.4-0.5” on trees/lines.

I lost power twice last year on days without a single raindrop, so you can imagine my confidence heading into this storm. 🤡

It’s the low tracking further north or something… there’s like 0 QPF now in SC near i20… starting to thin out in NC and GA too

CAD strength won’t matter for a lot of people in NC and upstate if there’s no precip… then we won’t have to worry about storm at all

For some reason, they count ice as snow. I know I was looking at mine before things shifted and it had me with 8-12 inches of snow.

Sounds like what happened with me involving work and Helene. I had a full day of work with my power still being out. I actually took my iPad charger LOL so I could charge my iPad for leisure purposes.

It came back on the second day I worked in the evening though. This power outage beat the 2014 ice storm. I didn't experience 2014, but I wasn't so lucky with Helene.

Just because there is not moisture on the radar doesn’t me that it will be completely dry! There most likely will be free drizzle and if will be close to end anyway and if you look at the 12knam the moisture was filling back in
 
For I-85 between CLT and GSO, it looks like the slush-fest and freezing rain will commence later than we had anticipated a couple of days ago. Looks like a Saturday evening arrival perhaps?

I ask because—like I’ve mentioned—my wife and I are in Grenada and deciding whether to fly to CLT Friday night at 11:59pm instead of Saturday evening at 7:15pm. (Originally had a 11:59pm Saturday arrival, but moved it up to earlier in the evening.)

I’d hate to come back on Friday night only for sleet and ice that doesn’t get rolling until Sunday morning.

Others have answered, but its legit. I could write paragraphs about it, but won't. Instead I'll break it up to bullet points regarding a Dec 2002 redux:
  • I used to pull for ice, cause it looks nice. Never again.
  • Power goes out making everything silent except trees/branches snapping. It's a distinct sound. It keeps going indefinitely. You'll get tired of it, but it won't stop.
  • greater than .75'' accrual with cold temps for days afterwards means it takes days to melt with full sun.
  • if you don't lose power at the end of the event, you might still because branches still fall from the weight even a day or 2 later, and even as ice melts it shifts the weight around.
  • If you get 2-3'' of snow/sleet at onset, it sucks because it ain't going anywhere with the sleet/ice on top. No traction and it doesn't wash away easily, meaning driving is treacherous especially if you've got hills. (at least snow has traction..)
  • You might not lose power, but you probably will. Maybe a day? Or 5? or a week and a half? You won't know, and you have no control over it (in my case it was a week and a half)
That was more bullet points than I meant. Maybe I should have just done paragraphs. 🤷‍♂️

Yes, that's generally what we're seeing with current models. You may be just fine with the 7pm arrival in CLT and the drive up. I'll only caveat it with recent years seem to see things hit a few hours earlier. You may have a slushy drive home; but if it's worth rolling the dice to not change flights, then go for it. Message me if you need help.

My only concern with regards to water is my pipes bursting. I may acquire some bottled water just in case.

Thanks, my friend!

My wife and I would normally just take the flight we had originally scheduled and not really sweat it. Because who doesn’t mind being stranded on a tropical Caribbean island with great food. LOL

But our parents are aging—my mother lives alone after my father died—and we’re the only household within our extended family with a wholehouse generator. So we have people relying on us.

We went ahead and checked in for tomorrow’s flight. Our big concern is—even if the arrival of the winter mess is delayed in NC—there’s no guarantee that the airline won’t have to juggle equipment around due to upstream delays and cancellations elsewhere in the system. This is a big storm of course and they could cancel Saturday’s flight regardless of conditions at CLT.
