I mean E3 has basically been dead since 2020. COVID helped kill it off, I knew it wasn’t coming back after that. Plus the big three (Nintendo, Sony, Microsoft) were already branching out and doing their own separate events. Sony/PlayStation hasn’t had a presence at E3 since 2018. Obviously other gaming companies participate (Square Enix, Ubisoft, EA, etc.), but an event like E3 simply doesn’t work without the big three present and unfortunately for them they’ve all moved on post-COVID.
I don’t know how realistic a scenario like this is possible or at least the legality of it, but I always felt like Xbox (and PlayStation to a certain extent with Sony) needs to divorce itself from Microsoft and become its own third party gaming studio. Xbox as it is now is not sustainable with their corporate overlords Microsoft constantly intervening. They can swap leadership chairs as much as they want, but Xbox as a brand is still on a sinking ship lacking vision or clear direction. The new CEO Asha Sharma having no experience in gaming, but plenty working in AI doesn’t inspire much confidence.
The entire situation is odd to me. I never seen a CEO announce a retirement and his replacement starts 3 days later unless there was some major controversy or public backlash. Neither have I seen said CEO’s #2 (Sarah Bond) abruptly resign from their position the same day. Feels like a forced or rushed exit to me, but who knows unless one of them releases a book or a documentary drops yrs later.
