Wintry December 23-26 2022 Winter Weather and Cold

I don't understand the back and forth, the front is not performing the same for everyone. For some it is absolutely historic and record breaking, for others it isn't. It can be record breaking for folks in TN, MS, and AL and yet not be in other areas. It is possible for people to experience different situations in different backyards.

Yep. Totally agree. Especially for us in South Carolina.:):)

The orientation of the cold may be different for people, but you can't say the airmass is underperforming, when it clearly is not.

In this part of the Deep South, it's extremely rare to see single-digit temps, not to mention the ridiculous wind chills. Of course, it also went from 49 in Chattanooga at Midnight to 8 by 8am. 40+ degree drops with high winds during that time is quite impressive down here! This was not a clear & calm radiational cooling night.

Yeah the wind is the big story here in NC. The mountains are blocking a lot of the coldest air
Yeah i thought the temp was going to go down during the daylight hours but its actually steady or up just slightly. Cold tonight though supposed to be 17 here.

I agree. So hard for that cold air to get over the mountains down to us from that trajectory. Always is and has been. What's your temp down that way. I'm sitting at 19 degrees currently.

Never have I seen a front drop the temperature so fast. I left work last night at 7:30 and the temp was 38 with rain and some sleet. 10 minutes later as I drove south the temp was at 27 degrees with blizzard like conditions. The low temps are very cold but it’s the high temps that are making this a once in a decade or more type of event. I’m sitting at 8 degrees at 1:28 and I don’t remember anything close to this in years past. I’ve experienced a number of 13-17 degree highs over the years but never any single digits like this front. I came across this article and took a photo because it’s just not something people will experience very often in the south east.

Speak for yourselves cause I’ve been sitting between 23-25 all day and that just doesn’t happen without some type of winter storm and snow pack going on. Tonight I’m likely to get well into the single digits with subzero wind chills so this is pretty historic. Even on the east side of the mountains
