I think a large part of the problem with masks is that a mask alone isn't enough. There are plenty of studies out there backed by science that show masks do reduce the spread of viruses, but that's not the whole picture.
Say someone is positive for covid, they don't know it because they are asymptomatic, but they are responsible and wear a mask when they go out anyway. How many times does that person touch their face a day? Try to go a whole day being conscious of how many times you touch your face, you'll be surprised how many times we all do it in a day, mostly subconsciously. Do they wash their hands or use sanitizer every time they handle the mask? If they wear a mask at the grocery store, but touch it to remove it while in their car, then touch it again to put it back on at their next stop, say the gas station, but don't sanitize their hands before they pump gas, well, they possibly just spread covid to the gas pump handle. Next person uses it and doesn't sanitize their hands after doing so, then touches their face subconsciously a short time later... You see where I'm going with this.
Also, do people change or wash (those that are washable) their mask frequently? If someone is asymptomatic for 2 weeks and wears the same disposable mask the entire 2 weeks, and continues to wear it after they have beat the virus, you can just imagine how filled with virus that mask is. Everything the mask touches, everything they touch after handling the mask, will get particles of the virus on it.
Masks DO help, but they aren't enough all by themselves. Being mindful and practicing good hygiene habits would go a long way towards helping to contain this virus, as well as other viruses.
Anyway, sorry for the ramble, just needed to vent a little, carry on!
