Funding lapsed: Key weather data source is offline and its future is in doubt

The Southeast Regional Climate Center (SERCC) provides timely, high quality climate data to the public. But as April 17, 2025, that data is not available to WRAL meteorologists to consider in their forecasts.

Founded in 1989, the office is located in Chapel Hill. Our WRAL Severe Weather Team has developed a great working relationship with them and rely on their data on a daily basis.

"They provide perspective on the weather of the day," said WRAL meteorologist Elizabeth Gardner.

WRAL meteorologist Brian Shrader added," Their data puts our weather in context."

WRAL uses SERCC data to:

-track pollen trends so that we can report on the seasonal impacts for allergy sufferers.
-check soil temperature information which is crucial for local agriculture and farming.
-During winter months, we use the soil data to see how fast snow or ice will melt or if anything could stick to the roads.
-answer questions about whether something is a record or out of line with average weather data. If you have you ever heard us talk about things like “this is the warmest spring on record” or “so far, this is the wettest year on record” or “the last time we had 10 days in a row with days at 100 degrees" – that data came from SERCC.
-Data from the SERCC provides a way for WRAL meteorologists to provide context to the weather on any given day.

I wore heels dancing a year ago. Next morning I could not put weight on my left foot. Diagnosed plantar fasciitis by dr. It was bad for months. Wearing orthopedic insoles in my sneakers helped. I avoided heels (and guys should probably avoid hard heeled dress shoes) and wore sneakers literally everywhere.
About six months in I started doing intense stretching.. 30 second gentle pulls on my calf muscles morning and night. I used one of those green nylon exercise straps for that. Within a few more months I was just about pain free. I don't have to stretch as much now.
Good luck fellow poster
Never diagnosed, but my cousin said it sounded like what her husband had and he'd fixed his by rolling his foot on a piece of 3 inch pvc pipe. I did it several times a day, thru the pain, and it cured it in a few weeks, or less.

The pope is dead everyone. 😭😭

Sad. I wonder if he overdid it yesterday and on Good Friday. He passed on “Easter Monday”, a holiday for many.

Back when I was in public school, we had Holy Thursday through Easter Monday off, a nice 5 day weekend. Back then there was no such thing as “spring break”. We also had St. Patrick’s Day off. Thanksgiving break was a Thu-Sun 4 day weekend.

Back in those days, there were other individual days off like Veterans Day and several “Records Days”. I don’t think I then understood exactly what those were but didn’t care as I just loved being off.

In those days, schools had ~2 week break surrounding Christmas and New Years. And most importantly, summer break was nearly 3 full months, not the 2 month+ junk of recent years!

You ever try and get around Savannah on St. Patricks day?

Plus many students and school employees liked going to the downtown parade, which started ~10AM.

I was in the parade once. Lots of drunks on Bay St. Bay St was down to a single lane because of them. Three squad wide platoons had to march as very long single squads! We had to dodge the beer being thrown lol.

I was thinking the same thing about the Pope being overworked this weekend. I had to double check sources when I saw it this morning because again he had been so public yesterday

But also at 88 it's hard to recover from anything despite what they claimed especially working

As far as the schools go they went here today and last Friday but supposedly have this Friday off for some random day. Spring Break was around St Patrick's Day

Thanksgiving is yeah a whole week now....when I was in school it was a 4-5 day weekend(starting Wednesday)

Since I posted that, I read that he was diagnosed with a stroke, which along with his already existing conditions was unfortunately too much to overcome. May he rest in peace.

If the latest models and patterns are right looks like we will be in a weak La Niña this summer rather than the El Niño that they were expecting

I was digging through my cloud data and came across some interesting facts WRT the ongoing drought. Bear in mind I have two NIST traceable calibrated devices I rotate annually for measurement. For reference our 1991-2020 normal annual rainfall is 50.25". Despite the green-ish spring appearance right now we're still in drought. I have incomplete data from 2020 and before that rely on NWS annual summaries. To be going on 4+ years now nearly a foot down or more in precip every year is beginning to be noticeable not just in ag trouble but in the trees too. I walk properties all over eastern NC and SC and the lack of growth especially from 2023 onward is noticeable. The last two years we'd be under 30" for the year if not for catastrophic flash floods which don't do much of anything for the water table or growing season. To note places like Wichita Falls,TX and San Antonio, TX average around or just under 30" per year.

2024 total rainfall: 37.88"
9.14" of that came on two days (7/15 and 8/7)

2023 total rainfall: 40.85"
17.1" of that came on three days (8/30 Idalia and 12/16-12/17)

2022 total rainfall: 37.92"
No one large total event.

2021 total rainfall: 39.45"
4" of that came on 1 day with TS Elsa.

2020 total rainfall: 63"
