Misc Cold Season Complaining

I never realized that so many people still rely on sirens solely to tell them to take cover. Its very weird I mean don't get me wrong I'm in a good spot here but it's not meant for people indoors to begin with

Two different areas since yesterday people throwing a fit online because there were no sirens. One dude in Wichita Falls was demanding to get answers from the city why the sirens didn't go off. Shrugs

Heck there's places I know of in Alabama getting rid of sirens entirely 🤣

Shrug

Even if you're not a weather nerd, if you get a "first alert" type day in the spring in the plains, you should keep an eye on the radar.

Right I mean it's the end of April in the Plains and we've been active for most of the month. Nobody should be caught off guard or surprised at this point. Heck it's the same areas as last week

Im just confused I didn't realize it was that big of a deal. Like here the sirens are just the icing on the cake

“US weather forecasting is more crippled than previously known as hurricane season nears
Responsible for protecting life and property from severe weather impacts, the National Weather Service is headed into hurricane season with 30 of its 122 weather forecast offices lacking their most experienced official, known as the meteorologist-in-charge.

There is not a single manager in place at the hurricane-prone Houston-Galveston forecast office…

That office was the main source of information during Hurricane Harvey, which killed at least 68 people…”

The image below shows in Orange the offices without a met-in-charge:

Not a big fan of having no met-in-charge in hurricane prone areas. 😬

I really don't understand how forecasting (machine and human) has gotten SO BAD in the last 3-5 years when it comes to rainfall. Maybe it's a local thing, I don't know. I've always relied on WPC outlooks for planning and NWS text products for short term stuff to plan my field work. Some of my bigger ag clients use private services but complain about the same thing.

So much planting has been done late because of drought and what seemed like a guaranteed area-wide half to three-quarters of an inch of rain. Now we've gotten a trace to maybe a quarter in some places and that just won't cut it due to lack of pre-existing soil moisture. WPC is now showing an inch to 2 inches widespread over the next 5 days so we'll try it again.

Not unusual unfortunately. Sad number of these groups are composed of veterans.

My BIL works for a telecom and they deal with the same stuff when it comes to their infrastructure. Years ago it was microwave towers and now it's the 5G/small modular cell towers.
