Pattern August 2023 Thread

Yes they are. It almost seems like Hilary moving up through the west begins the process of switching the pattern up
We may get a cooldown for a couple of days, but summer is not going anywhere. Labor Day weekend looks like a scorcher for many of us.

Not in way saying that hot weather is done for the season or that we’re done 90s around here after next weekend. However there’s nothing really in the ensembles to indicate anything out of the norm for the Labor Day weekend. Right now it looks like mid to upper 80s for most of the Carolinas which is about what you would expect.

What are we on, like week three of endless Excessive Heat Warnings for much of the Deep South / Texas?

When did they start giving them and how has the criteria changed if any?

I know they were around at least back to 2011/2012 here because those are our worst summers lately. At least here in Tulsa worse than this year even. I mean there was a day with an average of 100 in 2012. Texas is probably ahead or gonna be ahead of them though. The rain a few weeks ago kept our temps down

Yearly reminder the US Drought Monitor is the worst product ever. It's calculated on socio-economic factors and less on actual rainfall / weather data.

For my area: Last 60 days were 50% of normal rainfall.

30 Days, 50% of normal rainfall

and the last 14 Days have been 25% of normal rainfall

Yep.

About 12 inches of rain here in the last 60 days so that's cool but we had 25 straight dry days and only 2in in the last 30 so that's not cool. Nothing going forward looks exciting on the rain side. I'm sure we will even this dry out from November to March but that doesn't help the summer much

Yeah certainly doesn't tell the whole story. I just did a quick check, week by week for the last 13 weeks (91 days). I've had a total of 11.51" in the time frame: 5 of the 13 weeks with an inch or more, only 2 of the 13 with 2" or more (both the first 2 weeks of July). The remaining 8 weeks had only .55 or less each week with a 3 week stretch that recorded less than a tenth each week. Only 1.65 for August thus far, Poplar trees starting to show it too.... they are always the first to start shedding leaves when things start drying out like this

Poplars are shedding, a few white oaks are dropping too, and there isn't much left to the hickory trees. The only thing really green is the grass above my septic runs. LOL
