I believe Webb just answered our questions on what is going on in the January thread. It makes perfect sense why we are seeing what we are seeing. And I actually understood it. Now let’s see what happens next Webb?

ND beats Clemson, ND beats 'Bama, and FL is a top 5 team ...

To anyone saying winter is over on December 29th or even before March, Mother Nature says otherwise.

Lol, you got me. I understand maybe 25%. Don't know what he's saying is good or bad. I need a translator.

Haha nothing wrong with wishcasting.

If all goes well, my Important Exportin' Man has a $1,000 bottle of something to give me ... and if not, I owe him nothin' ... sorta like a winter forecast all rolled into the next 2 weeks ...

I guess going forward, winter outlooks are crap to me! It doesn’t matter the enso state, or anything. You just need to know the MJO phase. Apparently, it can take the perfect Nino pattern and make it act like a La Niña! So , soi, snowcover, midoki, lunar phases,, sunspots, woolly worms, are good for ----. MJO trumps all others!
Don't worry, next winter the MJO will be in favorable phases, and something else will mess it up.

Brick, you inspired me....and for the most part, you’re right!

When is the last time RDU recorded two or more >=4" snowfalls in the same winter (DJFM)? Winter 95-96. Before that? 88-89, then 86-87, then 72-73. The average sum of two or more 4" snowfalls for those dates? 10.9"... Which means on average those two events are 5.45" snowfalls.

basically, if 40 years of history has anything to say, getting two 4"+ snowfalls are rare, but two 8-10"+ snowfalls is unheard of...(for RDU at least) Have we seen the largest snow of the season? Most likely, yes.

The best of these 4 "dual big dog" winters for RDU was 1972-73, with 7.1" on 1/7/88 and 12.9" on 2/18/89. Another tidbit, of these 4 seasons, the earliest snowfall was 1/5 with 5.6" in 1996.

Awesome information !! Brick won’t like it , but I enjoy reading information like this about different areas . Very fascinating

I figured I was not far off. I just don't recall having more than one big snow a winter that often. I am not expecting another big one this winter, and would not be surprised to not get anything else this winter. For some reason, that is just the way it goes here most of the time.

Yeah, I was thinking the same. We have a lot of time to try for 72-73 repeat as far as snowfall goes.

Onslow, Duplin, & Jones county in southeastern NC were the places to be in 1972-73. The lesser known event on the Equinox in March 1973 is still pretty cool though, several reports of thundersnow in the north-central piedmont.

This is by far & away the craziest thing I've come across in the observed record in NC:

3 out of 4 winters in a row in the early-mid 1970s (1970-71, 1971-72, 1973-74) had significant accumulating snow at Raleigh & Greensboro on exactly March 25th & 26th, when our snowfall climo is usually hot garbage to begin w/, even for the dead of winter up north it's pretty amazing to see snowstorms repeat on the same exact day year after year but to do it when it rarely snows is even crazier.

1972-73 only missed by a couple days from making it a four winters in a row with accumulating snow on March 25-26th in Greensboro, Chapel Hill, & Roxboro.

Well Clemson is a beast, this game sucks. So what does GFS show. It’s a little bit funny.
