12/8/2025 Event - Repeat of Last Week?

The low level cold advection probably won’t kick in til closer to sunset and beyond so most of the cooling that’s going on atm in central NC is driven by melting snow falling into the shallow above freezing near surface layer.

It can cool down to about freezing or so and that’s about it, at least until the low level front comes in.
 
Above freezing BL + daytime sun angle + meh-ish rates is the unholy trifecta. At least soil temps are on the cooler side compared to many of our systems (GSO's is 39 which is better than many systems although hardly "great") and the sun angle is lower this time of year compared to Fab Feb / March where we'd really be cooked, as the kids say.
 
i can officially report a pathetic little drizzle in NE Durham lol. if it is mixed with anything, i wouldnt know -- the precipitation is too light & sparse to analyze 😑

As per usual the back door front is a little slower than expected, especially for the escarpment area. I figured you guys didn’t need that fresh injection though and would easily get to 31-32 when the decent rates showed up. I bet you still wind up with a couple inches this afternoon though.

Yeah I don’t doubt we can end up with around 3 inches now we are below freezing

BL temps and mehish rates, yeah an issue in marginal setup. But daytime sun angle in mid Dec is not an issue, seriously
 
slowly sticking on grass. it's been a crawl. this will sound like sour grapes but this feels like another storm where we're on the wrong end of the banding. precip rates aren't high enough to crash the column, so relying on cold air advection trickling in to the tune of a degree an hour. 32.8

Not as much for grassy areas, but I do think it still has a sizable impact on black-paved surfaces. Of course, with good rates its immaterial. It’s also fairly irrelevant with cold enough BL temps (which we sadly do not have). I’ve seen instant stickage on blacktop in mid February when it’s 20 degrees out, but that’s so rare here.
