Misc 12/31/16 - 01/03/17 Heavy Rain Event? Some Sleet

Re: 12/31/16 - 01/03/17 Heavy Rain Event?

Starting to see the convective cutoff over south Alabama. I really hope the convection cant sustain, and we see the moisture surge north, but there is nothing I can find to support that. Looking like possible 7"+ totals down there! We need that here in east central and northeast Al.

There's been a mixture of rain and sleet going on here for about the past half hour or so.

Re: 12/31/16 - 01/03/17 Heavy Rain Event?

Like I thought, the rain shield is shifting south. Can't catch a break here. Drought conditions have gotten worse every month for 7 straight months now.

Re: 12/31/16 - 01/03/17 Heavy Rain Event?

By the looks of things, the rain arrived sooner than expected, as did the cold upper level of air pocket that is moving with the initial area of rain. It seems to have been 7 or so hours ahead of what was modeled, and also gave some people a wintry surprise.

Definitely seeing some evidence of something frozen melting in the lower levels over the midlands of SC. Nice bright banding on correlation coefficient on I-26 between Columbia and Greenville...

Looks like you could see some sleet down that way later this evening if you are still in Fayetteville

Yep, lol. I'm definitely a huge weenie at heart when it comes to winter weather, but I usually keep that emotional tie to wintry wx out of when Im discussing thoughts, ideas, and analyses wrt a forecast... Im actually sitting outside watching this first band of precip just off to my west to see if I get any snow or sleet.

Light sleet here in Greenville SC even though it is 45 outside.

A couple of rounds of sleet here today as well.
Wow!
What attributed to this sleet event?

There was a cold pocket aloft that moved with the initial batch of rain, and I believe due to evaporation cooling, if I am correct, the cold layer developed, and there was a brief window of sleet as it moved.

Wow, that's extremely impressive, I certainly didn't think the IP actually made it that far south

Ya me too. Especially a couple of rounds too. Rain really evaporated around here.

I must say...the local media here busted big time with today's forecast.  Almost every channel but one was calling for nothing until after midnight..it's been sleeting since 1030A and pouring rain since 3.  Pouring again now and 37.2.  This is one of those yuck rains
