Misc General Banter Thread

I had no idea the Georgia house had passed legislation to move Georgia to Atlantic time as a work-around for daylight savings. The time change definitely needs to go away regardless of which standard they go with. The number of daylight hours doesn't change with the construct of time.

There are way too many people who think they actually gain an hour of sunlight.

I saw this map on Facebook last night and busted out laughing and told somebody good luck with that... I mean ours is pretty bad too but yikes

I don't have a dog in this fight because I work nights anyway but the amount of stupidity online is completely mindblowing. I had to just resist the urge to reply to some of it because it's so ridiculous what people believe. Like I get it... Getting dark at 4pm sucks but this is not the answer. The same law was repealed in 8 months in 1974. I don't think we're ever gonna stop switching unless they do standard time like Arizona does. Til that day happens not a chance this lasts even if they pass it

I also don't really think the Senate will do it anyway there's already been a lot of opposition rumored for this very reason.... FB_IMG_1784133207204.jpg

Yeah I think this will be a disaster.

I always think its goofy how so many grumble about the "sunrise" like that is when it goes from black to daylight. You can easily see where you are walking 30-40 minutes before the official sunrise.

I think it's ridiculous how people grumble and struggle with 1 hour change in time. People travel all over the world all the time, across all kinds of different time zones, feel a little jet lag for a day or 2 then move on. Suck it up, change clocks and move on. Haven't we got bigger things to worry about

Agreed -

* So what if you have to drive to or from work at dark? (modern day cars have headlights)
* If your kid has to take a bus at dark - stand there with them or use your vehicle as a structure for safety (timings may change - so what?)
* Its ok to turn a lamp on (maybe 2 or 3) at 5AM - If your electric bill goes up 5 bucks - stop going through the drive through one day
* Within 1 year - you wont know the difference

I do wish people had such strong opinions about all the real problems we have for sure

I mean it was post after post of the same thing earlier all with hundreds of comments on both sides. Almost never see that! All for an hour of daylight in the coldest time of year

I like having light longer at the end of the day, but I am fine with how we do things now with changing the clocks twice a year. I don't understand why this is a big deal.

Well that is because you dont live on the eastern edge of a time zone. If I lived in eastern time I'd probably be okay with keeping things as they are. However for us, its dark when I leave in winter and its dark when I get home.

For people like myself, after standard time goes in effect, the weekend is the only time you have to do anything outside.

Every single place (including the US before) that's tried year-round DST has walked it back due to a whole host of problems least of which people going quite literally crazy. The biggest issue people gloss over is just how DARK it would be in the mornings. Right now we have civil twilight at 6:53am locally at the latest in December. Moving that to 7:53am means honest to God stars out darkness until 7:45am, and we're not even the worst here. Indianapolis was an example used and while their sunrise would be after 9am, they wouldn't see twilight until 8:35am at the latest. With clouds and rain that darkness goes well past 9am. That alone has a whole host of safety and economic consequences. Even other countries who are in the wrong time zone (Spain) don't have sun rises that late.

Locally the golf industry are the only ones for it at least publicly. It would be a drag on the construction industry due to later starts. The rest of the hospitality industry is quietly for STANDARD time because there's evidence it would improve their cashflow in summer. Bringing sunset an hour earlier in summer (it'd still be 7:30pm in Myrtle Beach with twilight past 8) would do wonders for outdoor dining and other family activities. The same would be true across the south. It's just too darn hot in summer in the afternoons.

The way to actually fix this is to move the time zone boundaries to where they actually should be in relation to longitude instead of trying to accommodate state lines. Some exceptions can obviously be made for metro areas that border. Atlanta for example being west of Detroit should be on Central Standard Time.

If we don't go back to Standard time year round, we should at least roll back the Bush-era extension of DST. Flipping the clock so late in autumn makes the change that much harder for some people.

There's also precedent for adjusting time zone boundaries. They've changed quite a bit since the 1940s.

That last map has gotta be before the 1940s--likely heavy railroad route influence.

Ironically enough, I have little or no opinion on the great DST debate, but I like old maps (which most people don't care about) so that's what I'm commenting on. 🤣

Edit: Check out El Paso being on the boundary of 3 time zones, lol..

I can’t wait to have to wait an extra hour for the model runs in winter now!
Just leave 💩 alone!!

The sad and unprecedented release of winter model runs one hour later is so absurd and does nobody good. Forcing folks to stay up til 2AM for the 0Z Euro should be declared illegal! Perhaps that, alone, would lead to huge protests on the streets and then hopefully force it to be reversed!

Yeah I don't think it's gonna pass the Senate anyway several Republican senators have been publicly against it already but my whole thing I totally get the 4pm sunsets in Alabama I lived with them for 25 years I know how much they suck but on the other side of it... We weren't even dark enough for fireworks til almost 10pm a couple weeks ago. I'm glad I didn't have kids or something I mean that's crazy and yeah when you only have 8 hours of daylight in December you're kind of stuck with options

And yes to be totally fair on standard time it would be daylight at 4am in places in June!

I don't know what the answer is but most likely we're gonna keep switching. There's a reason we've done it our whole lives. There's a reason they've gone back to it twice since WWII

I definitely think for locking the clock to work, some time zones would need to be adjusted. In a permanent standard time scenario, the FL panhandle and AL should move to EST. In a permanent DST scenario, perhaps states like IN and MI could move to CDT. The current time zones appear to be drawn in a way that takes the twice-a-year time change into account.

People are whining and crying up here because if this DST bill passes, it won’t get light until 830-9 AM in winter and will have to change school hours and yadda yadda

My favorite show of all time. I always found some comfort in knowing a lot of these actors were still hanging around. There’s really only one left living now. Howard Platt who played Officer Hopkins. Since 2019 we’ve lost Demond Wilson, Lynn Hamilton, Nathaniel Taylor, Hal Williams, Gregory Sierra, Raymond Allen and Marlene Clark. IMG_0659.jpeg

It's really quite something to me too. I really can't figure out why so many people have such strong opinions about it when it's the least of our problems

I mean I work night shift... I barely see the sun anyway no matter what they do with it

But I do think if people are getting their hopes up something changes they will be disappointed and keep complaining

What really gets me is everytime we switch the last couple years so many people thought it already passed or we picked one or what not... Like people are so unaware of current events in general

Now onto my personal health. I just started taking ozempic in the pill form after moving from Jardiance. Got it called in to my local pharmacy 5 minutes from my future new home and they say this
Hello snowc,

One or more of your medications is temporarily out of stock and is being ordered. We expect it to be ready for pickup within two business days. Thank you for your patience, and we apologize for the inconvenience.
Why the he!l does these idiots at smaller chains don't order ahead of time? Or is it that Walgreens is holding up the stock of this medicine?
Just my opinion.

And yes I have Type 2 Diabetes. In fact, my entire family does.

Missed him by about an hour! He was at my Walmart yesterday IMG_5964.jpeg
