Wintry Machine Learning Mauler 1/30-2/1

Anyone else in the Athens area? Watching the radar it looked like we got dry slotted most of the afternoon. Just pixie dust not much accumulation outside of the inch or so we picked up before noon. Picked up late afternoon. I’d have guessed we got an inch or so, but the snow was so wind whipped all afternoon maybe it was more? Roads are a straight sheet of ice, wind still howling. Feels like I’m in Montana

This is the South, man; gotta dial down your expectations! 3" is a good storm around these parts! Don't get me wrong, 6" is my bar for a "serious" storm, but those are an every-few-winters kind of thing, usually.
At least one 2-4 inch event is pretty common where I live and love every single one of them. Sure the big dogs are fun but anytime snow is falling and covers the ground I’m glued to the window.

Just did some measurements and I think we are in the 3.5-4” range. Kind of hard to measure honestly. Thought we might’ve had more but alas. Oh well, it’s not over yet. HRRR suggests we snow for another 4-6 hours, although rates don’t seem fantastic.

Heavy dusting here to this point with light snow still falling and a very windy 28. It’s so cool watching it blow around in the strong winds, especially coming off the roof, because of it being fluffy. Looking at the leaves/grass, some is as deep as 1/2”. But some is closer to 1/4”. So, taking the average gives me 3/8”. So, maybe call it 0.3-0.4”. Our annual average is only 0.2” and we get no measurable the vast majority of winters. So, we beat that. The pavement is still just wet:

If can get the ratios that have been showing up and throw in the QPF, we could be cooking.

Jebwalk, may be my best ever
Me and my son went for one about 45mins ago and I felt like I was walking around Beech Mountain. Blowing snow and single digit wind chill. Tough to get this kind of atmosphere around here. Peepaw snowstorm

KGSO reporting .3 liquid from the storm. Insane rates. Wonder what their official number will be.
That's hard to believe. That would suggest like 30:1 ratios?

Also, correct me if I'm wrong, but high-ratio snow will melt a lot quicker than our typical southern slop, right? Since there's less liquid equivalent in there? Just something to keep in mind as the inches of snow from this may melt quicker than we would've otherwise expected with the cold weather coming up, particular in the sunny areas.

Absolutely. Also, a 2-4" storm like this that covers the roads fully, etc. is a very different beast (in a good way) than a lot of our 2-4" slopfests that slush up the roads.

Looking back on everything...which model(s) do you think did the best with this storm, start to finish?
In my opinion, the globals started doing well within two days. The Euro was the first to see the dry slot over RDU. Early on the NAM is awful so I would give it 24+ hours after a storm comes into its frame before it really gets an idea. I believe SREF did the best on mesoscale. The GFS wasn’t to far off with the euro but started moving in its direction 6-8 runs before game time. ICON and UK did the worst but I feel like it was because of the ULL transfer to the coastal low.

Have you heard anything out of Beaufort or Bluffton/Hilton Head? They've been under a band for a long time.

3 inches of snow and still snowing heavily here in SW Wilson county. Quite a bit of blowing and drifting snow at 8:30pm 17F wind chill of 4

I have moderate snow showers taking place. It quickly accumulated as I noticed footprints in my driveway was suddenly covered.

Probably my final measurement. 8" snow accumulation on flat table in yard. 1 mile southeast of SouthPark Mall in Charlotte.
Looks like just light flurries remain here.
Snow began around 5:00 am here.
Biggest snow accumulation for my location since 2014, when south CLT received measurable snowfall on 3 consecutive days, totaling 8 inches on that occasion as well.
