Someone with a better eye...the new RRFS that is replacing the NAM...0z looks less baja interaction and colder. It performed well last week IMO. Any thoughts?

Id say the 18z GFS and 18z Euro op are both guilty of sippin tonight. Just differnt flavors of moonshine. We want see another 30 incher, as much id like to. And we aint getting a triple phaser.

That ICON snow map for Virginia is nuts. Basically 15-20 inches everywhere but parts of Hampton Roads.

Not when the surface temps are in the teens with reinforcing CAD. A very large portion will accrue if it’s all ZR

I remember seeing an ob of 7 degrees and ZR for i think Saratoga NY before. Amazing
And sleet of that magnitude will take literally forever to melt with the cold air sticking around all next week. Long lasting effects.

We’re not escaping the CAD no matter how amped up our storm gets. Globals will be underdone on their depiction of surface temps in this set up. Take it to the bank

We laugh at that 18z gfs map. But its gonna come close somewhere. Def 20 inch stripe. Just most likely across state line
RGEM again with a massive, nearly stationary 1050 high over Minnesota spreading south and east. Front down to the coast and CAD taking shape.
Not exactly true when temps are in the teens and low 20s with constant supply of cold dry air

I just seen the Icon, looks good even for my area to the SW. freezing rain knocking on my door. Nice cold push on this 0z run
Ray has hoisted the “Big Snow” snowman up in Avery co. He even mentions the possibility for wintry mix all the way up there in the high country

And the Icon is usually more conservative in general. That’s a sign.

If that HP could just get up the road 6 hours faster, it will help so much on front end down into GA, SC area.
It’s usually warm biased so seeing it cold is kind of reassuring. Would love to have the 0Z Euro on my side though
I've seen freezing rain in the Triangle at 21 F but cannot imagine if that would/could occur here with a temp of 13 F

It says “GFS” at the top of the screen
for the record i think 18z euro could easily verify. it makes synoptic sense and has been a failure mode for us in the past. personally i think its north jump took a lot of right things to happen and it will come down to earth but it may not. i would not let a solid icon run rebut the idea that the euro family of models has

The GFS is unchanged through 30. The ULL is actually a smidge west. Not enough to change anything at this point though

Triple phasing though? We never see that…if we lose the storm to a triple phase I’m going to actually crash out. And by “lose the storm” I mean the snow because ice just sucks.

Most models have gotten the Baja lows the euro just triple phased and went nuclear on the WAA
December, 2002? That might’ve been mid 20’s. Still a nasty storm.

Through 45 hours, looks like 0z GFS is virtually unchanged vs. it's 12z run -- at least at upper levels.
That’s surprising to have the warm nose that deep then. At the same time frame, the Icon has the freezing line pushed all the to the coast of both NC/SC… the only spots in the Carolinas still above freezing is the extreme southern tip of SC and the Outer Banks

The Gulf has been near record warm this winter. We're also getting a lot of our moisture from the Tropical Northeastern Pacific too.

At 57 hours, it has more separation between the Baja low and the digging upper plains trough
A tiny bit more separation at hour 57. Nothing to suggest that a super amped up run is coming so far
