It's shocking how so many folks have no idea about Iran before the revolution - one of most progressive countries in the middle east when it came to womens rights, etc.The Iranian leaders (Mullahs) are bottom of the barrel horrible to the Iranian people, who hate their leadership and have for decades for obvious reasons. I have a decades long good friendship with an Iranian-American. So, I’ve followed this extra closely, which is helped a lot by the inside info he always has. Plus they’ve threatened Israel over and over. So, I haven’t supported what the terrible Iranian leaders have done for the last ~50 years. That being said, Trump repeatedly campaigned very strongly on America first and not intervening in other countries. That’s inconsistent.
Not really. That's nearly 50 years ago now. Anyone under 55-60 would only remember Iran like it is now. It's shocking how so many folks have no idea about Iran before the revolution - one of most progressive countries in the middle east when it came to womens rights, etc.

A terrible shame. And for what? Some British Petroleum oil? It's shocking how so many folks have no idea about Iran before the revolution - one of most progressive countries in the middle east when it came to womens rights, etc.
I work with and have known someone who defected the Iranian army during the Iran/Iraq war. He paid coyotes to get him through to Turkey, got a fake Italian passport, hopped on a flight to Barcelona, tore the passport up on the plane and got asylum. He has been in the US 30 years now and speaks four languages and owned multiple businesses. Yet some people can’t manage to travel to see snow. Most of us are very lucky to have been born here. The latest from my Iranian-American friend:
1. History would tell them all about that including readily available news/videos (example: showing women in bikinis) from 50+ years ago that are on the internet.
2. Gen Z/mainly young adults are especially extra passionate about ending the current regime. That likely calculates to close to 30+ million folks. The Mullahs are getting more concerned about this large group. More and more young women are now bravely going outside without head coverings! They’re not even close to yet all being in the streets, but an increasing number are and eventually nearly all of them might demonstrate if momentum continues.
3. Keep in mind that ~80% of current Iranians aren’t supporting the Mullahs.
4. That unfortunately still leaves ~20% (~20 million) that support them and who would be willing to demonstrate for the govt. However, only ~50%/~10 million would be willing to fight for the govt and perhaps only ~5 million might be willing to actually die in support. However, that would still be a lot of extremely passionate armed people to overcome. They’d fight very hard because to them it would be a ticket to heaven.
This is not going to go over well for many reasons.
What are those many reasons? This is not going to go over well for many reasons.
One is world wide condemnation. The world will only put on with us for so long before they decide we are no longer capable of being an ally. What are those many reasons?
Based on there being essentially no opposition, one would gather a deal was made with someone or someones very high up in the Venezuelan military. While they aren't even a near-peer force they certainly have the tools and training to make for a rough day. Will see if that truce holds. If not, get ready for Iraq 2.0 if the military falls apart into factions.
From a political point of view, hitting the Chavez mausoleum (allegedly) is a slap in the face to Venezuelans. While Chavez was a bit of a character, he was fairly popular up until his death.
This, more or less. Trump almost had to escalate this somehow because backing down from the circus in the Caribbean the last few months would’ve looked very weak vis a vis China, Russia, etc.1. I'm glad Maduro is gone. He was a murderous despot. Good riddance.
2. I'm deeply concerned about the wisdom of snatching a foreign leader, however illegitimate, from his bed in the middle of the night.
3. From a philosophical position, accepting the premise in point #1 that he was a murderous despot (which I don't think can be denied), I'm not sure I care too much about whether the (other) -reasons- behind the operation were because of the drug trade, oil, attempting to restore stability to Latin America, or whatever. Between you and me, I think one of the major reasons was because Trump could, and he wanted to show the world that he could.
4. The United States military is, simply put, the most incredible fighting force on the planet. May it ever be so.
Pretty much where where I sit. This, more or less. Trump almost had to escalate this somehow because backing down from the circus in the Caribbean the last few months would’ve looked very week vis a vis China, Russia, etc.
Maduro being gone is good, although I’ll reserve judgment on all this as this could easily turn sour depending on who replaces him. Not sure I love the precedent of rolling in and snatching leaders like that, either, although I guess you could argue it’s quite similar to when we deposed Noriega in Panama in 1989 or deposed the Grenadan government earlier in the 1980s.
Hoping for the best, so far, so good…Glad we were able to execute the operation without any fatalities on our side, either.
while I am very happy Maduro is gone, I am skeptical of our involvement running the country. Just from the press conference it doesn't seem like there is a plan in place. I think this is a very slippery slope. This could go great, or it could go awful. As an American I hope it turns out to be great
Aren’t the majority his puppets anyways?I’m just glad he didn’t tell the low IQ maggots in congress ahead of time. If we actually had respectable, competent people in congress, they should have been briefed.
Who, Trump?Aren’t the majority his puppets anyways?
Post of the century. Both sides are pure garbage and all of them collectively do us all a major diservice. Been going on for a long ,long time. Senate and congress is owned by K street and only serves them , and the man/woman in the mirror looking back at them.Who, Trump?
I would say the majority are controlled by the syndicate that has run this country for the better part of 40 years.
It could be said that it was a humanitarian disaster all the drugs they're sending to our country and the people they are killing every year. There are only a few justifiable reasons to use military force against another country:
1) self-defense
2) defense of allies
3) humanitarian intervention (to stop genocide / ethnic cleansing)
Historically, we only involve our military if at least 1 of those 3 reasons applies. None of them applied to Venezuela/Maduro. Getting rid of a dictator is a win for democracy but the means don't justify the end here, IMO.
One, who cares about so called world condemnation. You've worried about this for 10 yrs. Rest of world needs AmericaOne is world wide condemnation. The world will only put on with us for so long before they decide we are no longer capable of being an ally.
Two is the blatant false reason given. They've charged him with drugs and weapoon charges but trumps Been all over tv the last 2 weeks saying we are taking back land and oil assests.......it's always about the oil.
Places like Greenland and Canada who trump has said he wants to take over for their resources now have proof he is capable of steaking sovereignty from other nations.
Southern question for you is when the flow of drugs remains the same next year and this has done nothing to stop them from coming in what will all this have been for? Nothing!
He isn't pretending, he has come right out and said its about oil. The drugs are the reason he is going to be prosecuted, however. This isn't like Iraq 2 where we were fed a line of democracy lies just after the 9/11 failure. To pretend its about drugs is hilarious....Trump literally just pardoned the former Honduran president who got 45 years in a US fed prison for pretty much the same thing he accuses Maduro of. This is a oil grab plain and simple....
One, who cares about so called world condemnation. You've worried about this for 10 yrs. Rest of world needs America
Two, he will go trial and we shall see. I've said before, the so called war on drugs has been completely ineffective, it was time for difficult actions
Three, we're not gonna take over Canada
Four, another one of your talking points hypotheticals
I'm not the biggest fan of getting involved in other countries problems, but sometimes, America first means eliminating the threat abroad.
