Misc General Banter Thread

I also think a lot of the problem is also people just will quickly pay the money than do a little research and fix the small problems themselves. I'm no HVAC tech, but I've replaced contacts, three capacitors and my air handler's fan relay board. None or these require that much know how, but probably saved $1000s in labor and parts.

I see the same thing in the plumbing field. I know plumbers who are so busy that they will now ghost customers with small leaks because they are making bank from changing out toilet valves. A pressure regulator could cost somewhere between $300-400 for a plumber to fix for a $70 part and a little sweat. This is in semi-rural Alabama, not the bigger cities which imagine nail people much worse.
Same here. The amount of money I've saved over my lifetime doing DIY things is enormous.

The most recent money saver was diagnosing, removing, having the ABS module repaired rather than replaced, and reinstalling it myself in my Ford truck. $140 Total for the repair versus $1100 just for the part at the Ford dealership.

I replaced the capacitor in my upstairs AC unit last year. I ordered the part from Amazon at 1in the morning and had the part on my front porch before I finished my coffee.

Corn sweats FTL 70-80 degree DPs from now till October and probably less than .25 the rest of the summer as well! 🥵

I hate this sciatic nerve I’m having on my left side of my body. It’s been going on for about 6 months. I’ve been to the doctor and got two shots then medicine and nothing is helping. I guess because I’m getting older? This is miserable and very painful. Any advice on what else to do?

Have you tried ice pack on your lower back (not on your leg)? Put the ice pack on your lower back but over a thin towel to prevent frostbite. Don’t do longer than 20 minutes at a time.

I haven’t try that yet, I didn’t know that could help but I’ll try it thanks. 🙏

I have had it a few times and it’s terrible, stretches, massage and muscle relaxers are helpful

Yes I've discovered ice packs are like the number one home remedy for pain

I had chronic neck pain and stiffness for 15 months nearly 25 years ago. It was the result of a bone spur and an issue with a neck disc. It was disc 4-5 I think. They tried muscle relaxers and pain pills (those weren’t for too long at the start), NSAIDS, several epidural injections (ouch!), extensive PT, TENS, and massage. Nothing helped.

So, then I went to a chiropractor because there was an offer for a free initial consult. He didn’t yet treated me but he recommended I immediately buy an ice pack made for the neck and icing it several times a day. Within a few weeks my pain and stiffness were 100% gone!! It was likely the ice rather than a coincidence as I wasn’t doing anything else at the time. I never had to go back to the chiro for the first adjustment. So, the chiro was a godsend even though he never treated me.

I can’t say I completely understand , when I was in my late teens / early 20’s I would laugh at people who talked about back pain, I didn’t have a clueThen in my mid 30’s I suffered from sciatica ( at least that’s what the docs said). I had been pushing OSB onto a porch we were enclosing. It wasn’t all of a sudden, the next morning after a shower and getting dressed I bent over to tie my shoes and couldn’t stand back up. Absolutely horrible and one of the worst pains I had experienced. I never laughed at back pain again. Flexeril worked for me at that time. Not any help but hate that you’re going through it.

Speaking of plumbing repairs, the shower arm in my main bathroom just snapped off near where it comes out of the wall. I would try and tackle it myself but the arm was rusted through and the threaded end is still connected to the pipe. I've already called the guy that handles the major repairs at my house. We will see how this goes. I live in an older ranch style house that was built in 1967 and father time is starting to take a toll.

With the raw amount of viewership and money that even average people make live streaming weather coverage on social media, he's going to realize quickly that the normal job won't be needed anymore. I even get the majority of my coverage through these channels now, instead of reading and watching the local news.

I'd assume that this guy ends up making a nationwide weather network. People don't care for The Weather Channel anymore, and he has a chance to go ahead and take it out by having the name and experience.

I actually may launch my own channel in the not too distant future across all the platforms, YouTube, Kick, Twitch, TikTok, etc.

As much as I have my disagreements with Spann, his on air coverage just cannot be matched. Even on April 27, him and Jason probably saved lives outside of the ABC33/40 market. For instance, many do not know that Cleburne and Randolph counties in AL are in no man's land. BHM stations would drop off and Atlanta stations wouldn't care.

Probably a huge move for the already massive Spann brand.

Yeah we had a dude here who was chief and he already quit his TV job to do streaming. It's definitely the thing of the future as TV continues to decline in viewership

A few weeks ago he was the only one live during severe weather at 5am. All the TV stations were asleep
