U.S. Rep. Lloyd Doggett shared a letter with MySA he addressed to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration on May 20, detailing "critical understaffing" at NWS' Austin/San Antonio office. Prior to President Donald Trump's administration taking the helm, Doggett wrote the Central and South Texas NWS office had a 11% vacancy rate; as of late May, that number has doubled to 22%.

Doggett outlined recent departures of NWS Austin/San Antonio's warning coordination meteorologist, science and operations office, as well as its observing program leader as contributing factors to the heightened vacancy rate. In his letter, Doggett called on NOAA leadership to outline its operational plans given the possibility of additional staff vacancies and departmental budget cuts compounded by summertime severe weather events.

CORRECTION: While Hurricane Helene caused at least 250 fatalities in the Southeast, including North Carolina, Tennessee, and South Carolina, the Texas flash floods have already resulted in over 100 deaths and at least 173 people missing

100+173 is 273 whereas Helene was 250. So TX had more deaths than NC.

Are they hand nailing or are they using a nail gun? I asked them to hand nail as they do that on request. I was told that is a significantly better option.

Last evening, Dr. Knabb said high levels of moisture brought in on the right side of EPAC’s Flossie also was a big contributor in addition to Barry.

So the acting FEMA director is honest to God AWOL which is why the DHS Secretary was in Texas. You’ve gotta be kidding me.

Now it comes to light federal rescue teams couldn’t get to Texas until Monday because the expense had to be approved by the director along with FEMA rapid refresh satellite data. They all need to be fired.

I try to do it every other week but when it rains this much i've been a once a week guy. I've got at least 5 hours worth on the tractor but I love the time. Just pop the ear buds in and listen to music with not much to think about.

Some of us got out of practice with the 4+ years of drought. In 2023 I cut my grass 6 times total including leaves in the autumn. Had large patches revert to sand since we can’t irrigate enough to keep it alive on this hill.
 
I'm honestly beginning to not trust a rain gauge. Last night was a pretty solid storm that soaked everything and had puddles everywhere as far as I know...yet I was told that there was just .33" in the rain gauge.

That's strike 2 compared to what I heard in January, which I know for sure was wrong because we probably had roughly 2.5-3" of dry snow (closer to 2.5" I think). It was certainly NOT .39" liquid equivalent; it was probably .2" at most.

NIST-calibrated digital gauges are not that much more expensive than the generic ones. I always suspected they were off and the graduated cylinder kind have their own host of issues. Put it like this: Tire pressure gauges bought from a big box store or online can vary +/- 5lbs at a nominal 35psi. If those are 15% off I can imagine rain gauges can be the same way.

An Honest Message

I decided to do this in text form as opposed to a video. And let me preface this by saying any issues that I am dealing with pale in comparison to what many others are dealing with, so I am not asking for any sympathy, but rather patience and understanding.

For the past month, I have been battling a couple of different illnesses, both of which appear to be slowly on the mend. I am facing both hernia and gall bladder surgery at some point in the not too distant future. On top of that, as many of you know, part of my income comes from rideshare driving. Well, back in late April while driving someone to the Charleston, SC airport, I hit a massive pothole, blew out my left front tire, and did over $4000 worth of damage to the underside of the car. My car finally made it to the body shop on June 9, and due to a variety of bizarre circumstances, I just got it back today. I will not bore you with everything that has transpired since then, but the bottom line is I lost $2500 worth of income, paid a $750 deductible, paid a $142 towing charge to get my car towed from the body shop to the Toyota dealership, and an additonal $684 to have the computer on my car fixed, which would not have been necessary had the individual who swapped out a dead battery known how to change a battery without killing the computer. As a result, i had a net loss last month of $4000. This has been very difficult to deal with on top of not feeling well. Today i hit a wall and concluded that i need to detach myself from the world for a bit. So you will not hear from me for at least a week while I try to clear my head and recover my enthusiasm for life which has rarely been an issue. Obviously if something major comes up, I will not abandon you! I just need some time to recharge. We are now 3 weeks past the solstice. We are starting to lose daylight at an increasingly rapid rate each day ! We’re about a week away from the climatologically hottest time of year in terms of averages. I haven’t noticed daylight shortening any yet but I’m sure over the next 2 weeks I will notice the first signs of the shortening daylight.
