The service has also requested to reduce its end-strength target for fiscal 2022 to 476,000. The plan is to regrow the active force back to 485,000 troops across the five-year budget plan, though it’s not clear when that will occur.

“The genesis of [the cut] was really recognizing that as we look ahead to recruiting projections...we weren’t going to be able to get where we needed to be in [fiscal 2022 and 2023] without making some decisions about changing our standards,” said Army Under Secretary Gabe Camarillo.

Camarillo added that “this is not a budget-driven decision — it is entirely about quality, and we will look to build back up our end strength.”

I go all the way back to Walter Cronkite days and his totally false reporting on a battle in the Vietnam War, that really turned public opinion against our military personal over there. Pretty sickening reports coming out of Ukraine. Obviously you take everything with a grain of salt, but I mean children being raped and murdered is probably a topic of either its happening or its not. I've certainly noticed even China and some of the other Russian allies distancing a bit more. We don't know any kind of reliable numbers about civilian deaths and probably won't. We need to continue to build up our military and allies, I guess forever. The world hasn't evolved. Could you imagine what an invasion on our soil would look like? Seems like it could never happen but under the wrong leadership, for a long enough time I could see it.

Look, a few things: First, I doubt most here are Biden supporters. But that's neither here nor there.

Second, if you've read any of my posts, you know I agree with much of the sentiment you shared. Many in the west seem to want war. Most people are more comfortable with their head in the sand and would rather be led by ideology than critically thinking about the bigger picture and the interconnectedness of the institutions which we rely on that are supposed to hold each other accountable. There is a tremendous amount of misinformation and narrative-shaping from a lot of "trusted" sources.

Third, Russia, whatever their motives, is not a benevolent regime. They've likely committed war crimes. The west has killed innocent civilians in the past too. But that doesn't absolve Russia.

Fourth, most people have no idea what's coming in the way of food shortages and price increases and how hard life is about to be. And that's not even taking into account the worst case scenario.

Fifth, and last, when you drop the F bomb (or equivalent) every other word, it both loses it's punch and greatly undermines what you're saying. It's great to be passionate, but it's not worth killing your credibility to be so over the top. Serious people don't talk that way.
 
I dont think anyone in the west wants war, including the one in Ukraine. The west also does not want Putin to rebuild the iron curtain by force, luckily his army is a big hot mess and is losing to Ukraine.

Russian troops are committing war crimes, and the Russian people dont have a clue or dont care. The amount of lying and straight up propaganda state TV is showing means most do not even know they extent of Russian losses.

Russia is not fighting for its survival, there is no threat to Russia. What really is happening is that the corrupt Russian government is fighting for survival and we should all hope that it loses that fight. Putin and his little henchmen fear the growth of true free democracies along their borders, the influence of such things may actually drive Russia down the same path and that is what Putin truly fears, stable democratic neighbors.

Ideology? Human decency should be everyone's ideology. Our grandfather's went and fought to stop these kinds of massacres. Now people re more worried how much their steak might cost.

Africa is a much different situation though, most of the conflicts there are tribal/civil war types of setups and there is a lot of aid going to these nations. The USA does send aid to these nations, but the infighting in most of these troubled nations makes it hard to get aid where it is needed. Most are low level intensity type conflicts with no real front or area to focus on. trust me though there are a lot of special force type US troops over there involved in these since most contain a element of radical terrorism. Then you have things like the Central African Republic civil war in which all sides suck....but I agree the US should do more.
