Political Thread Part 2

Please provide a link to the exact comments since you brought it up so we know what words to debate.
Todays press briefing was still ongoing a minute ago but they usually post what was said here.

Don't bother, that's their modus operandi to question you until you crave when they could Google it themselves. I was taught by sunstein's advisor. I know their game.

1. What do you mean by “their” and “they”?

2. If a poster is going to say that someone said whatever, why isn’t it fair to ask for a link to what that someone said? What is your point?

This is precisely how these threads become unnecessarily nasty.

Lockdowns ,quarantine laws, and vaccine mandates caused inflation and the supply chain collapse.
Sanctions caused oil to rise.

Amazing how politicians push the blame when it is their own policies that are causing the issues. Gaslighting at it's finest.
So did tariffs

Who wants to talk about tariffs that have been enacted over the past 18 months :)
Not something I feel qualified to discuss but I'd love to hear your thoughts, and by qualified I mean it's something I don't fully understand

They are a tax on imports paid by the importer not the ones in China doing the exporting. The goal is pressure people to buy from home. Not A bad idea but also a dangerous way of implementing it. So trumps tariffs added 2k a year to the average household. That means due to the increase cost of the import tariffs people had to raise prices of goods.....inflation......and then when hit with the pandemic an already shoddy supply chain crumbled and inflation exploded as things became harder to get.

I fully realize it is normal for politicians of all parties to try to slant things in their favor and Biden is no exception. They’re all full of it quite often. But analyzing what the WH just said:

“There is widespread consensus that the runup of energy prices since January was caused by the building of Putin’s troops at Ukraine’s border. Russia is the world’s 3rd largest oil producer, and energy supply disruptions and market volatility are a result of Putin’s aggression.”

Is this inaccurate? If so, why? Oil prices increased worldwide (not just in the US) very sharply (well until two days ago). This isn’t the same thing as saying that Russia/Ukraine situation has been the sole cause of inflation. If they were to say that, I’d be heavily criticizing them. Inflation increases have been ongoing since 2020.

The first that really annoyed me was on container chassis from China. It was enacted to make US chassis builders more competitive on the domestic market place but most weren't ready to handle the flood of need that came in late 21 so we are still left with a container/trucker/chassis imbalance. This means American mfg/reseller is having to pay demurrage charges to the port and potentially per diem charges to the steamship line and that cost is passed along to the consumer.

The second is on fertilizers and fertilizer raw materials. Again done to make the American mfg more competitive in the market place but supply =/= demand so prices go up.

Third not tariff related but it's hard to see food prices going up and hear that we have a wheat problem when 25ish% of the US harvest exports were left at the port to spoil in 2021 due to big box needing the container volume and the fact that most steamship lines make more money sending containers back to origin from the US empty than with exports on them.

I know what life was costing my family before 2021 and I know what it is costing us now. How our country got to this point doesn't matter anymore, it's how and who can fix it. I don't have 1 once of faith that the current occupant of the whitehouse is the answer as his agenda seems to be driven by something or someone else that is only hurting the middle class. My wifes real estate business is off the charts in Wake and surrounding counties but her family farms and we are having a sit down this weekend to make some tough decisions on the coming year. Build back greener or whatever the hell they call it is destroying this country, our military leadership is weaker than anytime I can remember it and the rest of the world knows it.....This is where we sit

I know a lot of business abandoned Chinese sources for other SE Asian countries or for Mexico due to this tariff but a lot of those countries went into full covid lockdown which as you said caused things to crumble and prices to really skyrocket. Then you had the fight for vessel space once those countries came back online and a huge amount of blank sailings or FAK/spot rates which were in the $20-$30k range to move a box from SE Asia to a US port. Tough pill when you use to be able to move that same box for as low as $2500-$3500. Now with most ports, steamship lines, and truckers waiving liability for charges incurred along with reducing their free days from 10 to 4, and the live unload window for 2 hours to 1 the extra charges that used to be near $0 that the American business paid can be as much as $5000 per container.

Yeah these policies are always more complex then the messaging leads you to believe. And I agree totally with the price of food issue, we raise more then enough grains in this country to offset the rising cost but hearing them sitting at ports to spoil due stupid contracts/policies. Reminds me of Gov't contracts with farmers where they can only produce a certain quota on a certain acreage, I've literally seen fields left unharvested and/or destroyed because they would surpass the quota and make less. Seems so foolish but big box greed and Gov't regs will do that

One of the very frustrating things for both sides of the equation is these Administration's have been, and probably will continue to be polar opposites. They come in and undo whatever the last Administration was trying to accomplish. Meanwhile we get to Pay to fund all these programs with trillions of dollars. Very little is actually being accomplished in a positive direction in the term of the presidents but the money is being spent either way. Listening to the state of the union and hearing them rattle off all the garbage that I will need to pay for is ridiculous. We aren't an ATM. But by the looks of things I don't see where this changes in our Country.

I think the Dems, especially the left wing, have been much too aggressive with their push to replace fossil fuels with green energy. They’re way too one sided about this and this is liable to hurt the US at some point. But the good news for now is that US oil production is coming back nicely from COVID related production drops and is projected to hit a new record high by next year. And NG production and exports are both headed for another record year this year. All of this despite Biden’s stance toward green and away from fossil fuels.

Regarding the stoppage of Keystone XL construction in the US by Biden in 2021, that as we know has nothing to do with US oil production but rather Canadian imports. That pipeline was only 8% completed when Biden stopped it. So, nothing would have flowed from it for several more years from now meaning we wouldn’t have a lowered demand for Russian oil yet had Biden not stopped it. But within a few years, it would have helped. I wasn’t and am still not in favor of stopping it and thus disagree with Biden.

I’m worried about our future . We have exhausted all monetary policy used to help stymie economic slowdown , made our currency worthless , inflated prices of basic goods to record levels , abused the constitution like it’s a backpage ----- or a Taco Bell shitter , and are heading towards another war . Nice .

Guess monetary policy, stimulus, debt had nothing to do with it. What a bunch of liars. They think you are stupid.

We've seen some solid relief on getting shipments out via truck. A while back we were having issues getting anything live lined up and most of our orders went on dropped trailers from various companies. We are back to a regular flow finally.

Good point! I have been saying this for 2 years here. There is no such thing as fiscal responsibility in our government anymore and it never will be again because it has gotten too deep in the BS. I have zero issues with wanting to upgrade our infrastructure and I could have gotten behind the Democrats on this but that isn't what they want and they flat out lie about it. They want to kill the oil industry and don't care who they hurt along the way (The people who vote for them). There is going to be new leadership in the house and prob the senate next year. Will it change anything? Just getting Pelosi away from house speaker is a damn great start

Best post ever . Please ban anyone who doesn’t see this . It’s the cold hard truth . We are being lied too. Dems are scrambling to cover face . They dropped their mandates and are desperate to find something to stick the economic problems on . Be it Putin or the pandemic . Maybe they will come up with a Putin pandemic . New coronavirus strain that makes you become a Russian colluder with extreme vodka alcoholism .

Of course, her goal just like any press sec, is to make the White House look good and she’s doing her best to do so. But I still don’t think what she said is inaccurate. She didn’t say that Putin threat and attack on Ukraine caused all or even nearly all inflation increases since 2020. She said that that has added to it.

I appreciate it, but it's far from that.

Republicans lie too.

I keep hearing this "record year" on oil and NG production. That's great to hear! It means absolutely NOTHING to me right now when I have I go to fill up or go to the grocery store. The decline started when Joe Biden was elected and I think the majority of America is tired of the excuses and blame. The proof is in the pudding.......We have enough natural resources in our own ground to put a stop to many of these problems but we are NOT moving in that direction today, tomorrow, nect year or the year after that

We were energy independent up until about a few weeks ago.

And they also stated today that is would be "temporary".

Did they say how long "temporary" was in their world?.....lol. That's the trillion dollar question! You never know with that crowd of geniuses
Well today temporary means just before the end of the year, according to them

A good break down on energy dependency.

Alot of people heard the word "energy independent" and thought it meant we no longer imported oil / other forms of energy. We were still importing ~10 million barrels of petroleum per day in 2019 (energy independence year). It was really just a political buzz word.

Yeah outbound has gotten better as long as it stays east of the rockies we are still having trouble into the west coast states most carriers aren't even bidding that freight now. Our big issue is still drayage and chassis, I'm getting hammered by my boss and our leaders to figure it out but short of driving the truck and building a chassis in my garage I'm not sure what I'm supposed to do

No we didn't think that, in fact most of us knew we were still importing from other locations, the key is not being totally dependent on those countries so if something like now happens, we aren't at their mercy.

And I thought you requested a ban? Lol

Did we import sweet crude for Texas T? What type was imported? Not trying to single you out. Just pointing out most people don't understand the complexity of the oil industry.

Not you necessarily, but that is how alot of people were lead to think of it. We were still absolutely dependent on other nations as alot of the oil we produce is exported. If the global supply is reduced (pandemic, war, etc) the global price goes up, domestic oil companies are not going to sell to US consumers at a discount. It will be sold to us at market price which is what we are seeing now.

Edit - SD banned me earlier but missed me and begged me to come back.

Don't know... I would imagine it is different based on number of countries we import from. But yes it's complex and different oil used for different things.
