I had a chance to visit St. Petersburg back in 2017, and wanted to explore more of Russia, but after all this I’m not sure I’ll have another opportunity any time soon, if ever. Sad. My father did have a chance to visit the USSR on a school trip in the late 1970s (he studied Russian language during high school), so I suppose you never know, though.

Eastern Europe in general is somewhere I need to get to more. Only been to Talinn and St. Petersburg briefly.

Don’t mean to make this about me, as this is a serious affair. Just adding a personal touch to it.

Well if it keeps going the way it is, you will be able to vacation in Russia very cheaply in the future. That is if you are permitted to enter the country.

That is not say that this is an attempt to get the gang back together, but Putin has long had a history of keeping former USSR nations in line, under his authoritarian thumb.

Gotcha guys. I was more wondering why Moldova was more a target than say other former soviet republics (like say Azerbaijan to pull up an example) I know Georgia had some Putin shenanigans in 2008 as well.

Anyway, I'll look into it and see if I can get a read on it.

I think Moldova is just an easy opportunity. It has a separatist region ready to take up arms for Russia, it's landlocked and easily accessible from the Black Sea through Odesa, Ukraine. I don't think it's necessarily Moldova (over any other nation) that is calling Russia's name, more so than the opportunity since they're already knocking on the door.

If Putin tries to make another grab and goes for Moldova, it would be to complete the buffer zone of non NATO countries on its western frontier. Russia has peacekeeping troops in the Moldovan Transnistria region of that small country. If he's trying to halt NATO's eastward expansion by force, that's the way to do it. That's just my thoughts anyway.

Mainly this wonderful place which is another Russian-backed separatist state which has a Russian military presence.

Sounds similar to Ukraine. And Georgia, for that matter.

Moldova is also not a part of NATO and would presumably be very easy for Russia to conquer.

I don’t think it necessarily will happen for sure, but it does seem like a logical next step to me depending on how the war in Ukraine plays out. And given how most of the world has closed itself off to Russia now, Russia might need to go on a regime-changing spree to secure trading partners at this point.

We also have to keep in mind that historically Russia has viewed all of Eastern Europe as being their sphere of influence.

Familiar playbook indeed. So a Moldova land grab might make more sense than the Baltics because they aren't NATO yet

Nostalgic leaders trying to make what once was all over again. In putins eyes the "glory" days of Russia were during the cold War and before the breaking up of the Russia. He wants to rebuild that to "make Russia great again".

The world needs fresh new YOUNG leadership.

It's because of Crimea. If Ukraine were to join NATO it would automatically trigger article 5 which would mean war with Russia automatically because Russia occupies Crimea. 7.8 Billion Lives including mine are at stake because of Crimea in 2014.
