Tips, pics, questions, grass, plants, trees shrubs, anything gardening! I’m in Zone 5 now, so it’s quite a bit different
That sucks! As y’all know, weather and gardening go hand in hand! It was an extraordinarily wet year this year, shrubs and trees should have flourished, I can see it causing a lot of issues with fruit and veggiesMy watermelons totally flopped this year (No Pun intended!) with the late start due to the cold lingering around. They didn't ripen until end of August and by then the sun was too weak and they didn't generate enough sugars. Just very Meh in flavor.
Up here , blue spruces and other conifers, are everywhere! They have some kind of regular maple trees, not Japanese maples, with dark red/purple leaves and hydrangeas are everywhere! I’m in an apartment, so my plants are limited@Tarheel1 wait till I post my favorite plants .... pines palms and live oak trees !
Beautiful Mack, I'm a conifer man too. Roses are my summer hobby and will try to add some pics laterUp here , blue spruces and other conifers, are everywhere! Here in Dubuque, they have an arboretum with a conifer and mini conifer garden! It’s pretty coolBeautiful Mack, I'm a conifer man too. Roses are my summer hobby and will try to add some pics later
Great thread !.
Nice! I have a potted, golden oriental spruce, in the spring its loaded with small red blooms that looks like strawberries.
Send me one of those spruce
Yeah I'd get it down right before the next .33+ rain. It's better to get it down too early vs too lateI for one am ready for some sunshine and dry weather, with March right around the corner it will be time to get in the garden and do some clean up and pruning. I'm in zone 7 in WNC, is this coming week going to be the time to put down pre emergent with temps possibly getting into the low 60s?
They don’t like the heat. They really don’t do well in zones 7/8. People love Dwarf Alberta spruce and blue spruce, but they languish in the heat and humidity and eventually die. Get a Arizona Cypress ‘blue sapphire’ or blue iceSend me one of those spruce
I have 2 they are going nuts and outgrowing the LeylandsThey don’t like the heat. They really don’t do well in zones 7/8. People love Dwarf Alberta spruce and blue spruce, but they languish in the heat and humidity and eventually die. Get a Arizona Cypress ‘blue sapphire’ or blue ice
Plant some palms !I have 2 they are going nuts and outgrowing the Leylands
I planted 2 at the same time 2 years ago, one died in the fall, with a west facing which makes sense with the pm sun.Plant some palms !
What kind of palms did you have ? You live in the foothills don’t you?I planted 2 at the same time 2 years ago, one died in the fall, with a west facing which makes sense with the pm sun.
I thought it was the neighbors dog pissing on it.
I've been looking for the dwarf English boxwood, but having a hard time. HD and Lowes will get them in from time to time, but I believe they are getting replaced by other varieties.
I don't grow palms, I was commenting on the Alberta spruce. I've been to the one in Asheville which is really nice. And of course Biltmore has a ton of tropicals. What kind of palms did you have ? You live in the foothills don’t you?
For all garden lovers visit the JC raulston arboretum in Raleigh ! I may make a trip if they are open on Sunday ! Real cool place !
Idk if I want to deal with it. It'll stress me out in winterPlant some palms !
Depends , your zone 8A . Mean minimum probably similar to the airport so about 12 degrees , a once in 10 year freeze would be under 5 , similar to the 4 degrees in 2018. I’d stick to palms that can survive that . Sabal minor , needle , and windmill palms would handle it and you would never worry. Sabal palmetto like at the beach would be good too bar a particularly cold year like 2018.Idk if I want to deal with it. It'll stress me out in winter
What? The Arizona Cypress?? They grow crazy fastI have 2 they are going nuts and outgrowing the Leylands

They are great! About the fasted growing shrub I know! Check out Mr Maple . Com, if you like unique trees and shrubs! Also you live near some awesome nurseries like PLANT Delights nursery and Camforest nursery! You need some camellias! Especially camellia sasanquas, if you don’t have much shade. Ligustrum sunshine, great also! Sorry I needed out and don’t have a yard anymoreYessir
No way they got live oaks in dubuque ! They would shed their leaves or die off entirely in dubuque .Live oaks are popular Here
Haha keep giving me suggestions. I'm trying to wall my yard in with trees and shrubs versus buying a fence. I have no shade so I've been out on camellias but I love them soThey are great! They have some oak with bigger oak leaves that stay on even now, they turn brown and just stay on until new ones come in, so they tell meNo way they got live oaks in dubuque ! They would shed their leaves or die off entirely in dubuque .
Any of the camellias fragrant? I've seen quite a few that I liked but never tried emCamellia Sasanquas , can take full sun and bloom in the fall( octoberish)
Not normally fragrant. There is one I know of called Apple Blossom, that has a slight fragrance.Any of the camellias fragrant? I've seen quite a few that I liked but never tried em
The Apple Blossom and the Sasanquas looks really nice, from what I read said they do well in full sun to partial shade. Not normally fragrant. There is one I know of called Apple Blossom, that has a slight fragrance.
I have a couple of these as specimens and have groomed to take on the conical upright shape. Definitely a keeper and so far deer resistant.Sunshine ligustrum! The new hotnessView attachment 76384
Depending on the area and desired results, you could possibly use some tropicals or flowering ornamentals. This could get pricey but is an option. Also might want to check out some perennials. You guys got any suggestions on different summer annuals this year? Wanting to change it up from the usual fare that is at lowes.
I suggest sun patiens, you can find them at Lowe’s, but they are still not common, and variegated ones are available and awesome, but can be hard to find and higher end nurseries may have them! Sweet flag is a good tough yellow grass that is good for pots. Lantana look good in pots. Creeping Charlie, sweet potatoe vine green and purple are good alsoYou guys got any suggestions on different summer annuals this year? Wanting to change it up from the usual fare that is at lowes.
No Perennials. I'm fickle and want to be able to change the layout year to year. lolDepending on the area and desired results, you could possibly use some tropicals or flowering ornamentals. This could get pricey but is an option. Also might want to check out some perennials.
