Misc Sports Thread

Wonder if they're blaming the ACC for a conflict of interest as well, like they are with the SEC on r/cfb.

Ron Courson said about a minute ago (few days ago) that if he didn't think it was safe for Georgia to proceed, that they wouldn't be trying to, but the SEC's medical team only has 2 infectious disease doctors.

The ACC’s medical expert (From Duke I think) said it’s safe to play. I don’t think the ACC has had any positives since intake.

You really think they would choose politics over making money in this case? No. They are just trying to do the right thing for the safety of the players.

I'm not taking sides. Rather, I'm saying that I firmly believe that politics are unfortunately playing a part in this. Do you think if the Pac 10 were instead located in the SE US that they'd be as firm against playing? I definitely do not. Do you think that the SEC would be favoring playing as much as they are if their schools were on the west coast or in the NE US instead of in the SE US? I highly doubt it. Keep in mind where the bulk of the alumni are living.
 
Big 12 vs SEC/ACC now. If they hold firm, slim hope for CFB for 20/21.

Spring isn't possible, so if everyone cancels, welp, see you in fall 2021.

Yep spring is a big no go. I believe title IX says you would have to play all sports in the spring then, no way you can play 23 sports in one semester. It’s definitely Fall 2020 or bust.

Well it's a pandemic so it really shouldn't be a political thing at all. Unfortunately, our leader made it into one. The fact that there is shown to be heart damage in a not insignificant percentage of people that get the virus, even in mild cases, seems like it would be a huge liability issue. I think that's a big reason why they are choosing to push off their season and hope there get to be some treatments so that doesn't have to be a concern. Maybe the ACC and SEC decide they will take the liability risk, but the moment something bad ends up happening because of it the whole thing comes crashing down.

I’m curious do you think football should cease altogether since the risk of concussions exist to the fact it leads to brain damage and a shorter life for some?
 
Whatever Big 12 decides today will decide the fate of the 2020 CFB season.

Yeah it would not surprise me if college reverses course and goes full online outside of lab. If I were a student at a big campus I'd feel cheated. When that happens I'd go home.

Elementary/middle/high schools have already been wishy washy on oh we're going to go online and oh let's go in person in at least Georgia.

It'd be easier for colleges to decide to flip to all online classes because several college classes are taught online.
 
I'm watching the 2000 Independence Bowl from 12-31-2000 featuring Miss St and Texas A&M on SEC Network. Lots of snow. I remember watching this game and being so jealous that Shreveport was getting snow.

No surprise as it continues the general pattern of red state schools wanting to play and blue state schools not. The Big 12 is mainly in red states. The same is the case for the SEC and to a lesser extent the ACC. OTOH, the PAC 10 and Ivy League are mainly in blue and the Big 10 is mainly in blue or purple states. Just noting a correlation.
So predictable in this way. Politics is clearly intertwined. And I’m not trying to take sides here.

It’s crazy. HS and MS sports and travel teams are playing now. Yet colleges can’t play. What a joke. So when virus is here next fall cancel again?
 
It will be interesting to see what happens this time next year if covid is still around. Cancelling 2 years in a row is unfathomable.
 
Regardless of whether you want to make things political or not, I think protocols are going to change in 2021 even if we don't see a vaccine in the spring.

At least as long as we gain some common sense and also start focusing on antivirals. As if there's not a vaccine, there's going to probably be an antiviral.

I keep hearing vaccine. Problem with that is that no one is going to take it. I’ve talked to some very very pro vaccine people who flat out say they will refuse to take it.
 
One more note. The reason sports were stopped in March was because this was a novel virus. There was little information available and what information was available we now know was being misconstrued by WHO and China. Now that we know a lot more about the virus especially the fact that the mortality rate is very low, much lower than thought it would be back in March, it’s safer to play now than back in March. There were inherent safety risks in all sports before the virus and there will be after the virus. Those have been accepted and sports continued. This is no different.

We are going to be at the point in which that's not going to matter unless we're at 15-20% of the population taking it next year.

Also wonder how people are going to feel if jobs are going to 100% REQUIRE you outside of religious or health reasons (outside of worry over side effects or even, I'll go there even though I feel it's a total conspiracy, being chipped), or you're going to be told to look elsewhere. Because I don't really care about hearing this again after right here. I'm going to most likely have to unless I contract the virus or I will be forced to change fields and even possibly go back for 4 years (which I'm not going to, I am for a year but not 4).

I've moved one back already (she worked with football program and today Big South cancelled all Fall sports which sucks) moving the 2nd one back this Sunday. So yeah students at college but not allowed to play sports because apparently the virus only spreads on the court or field

Yeah it’s getting ridiculous tbh. Hopefully common sense will prevail sooner rather than later. Can’t imagine how dorms would be safer than an outdoor football field with players wearing gloves and helmets!
 
At some point the financial crunch is going to be massive, sports related.... I've enjoyed MLB season thus far but can't help but think, all these players getting paid millions and all those empty seats, severely cuts revenue for pro teams. Of course this applies to all pro sports

Colleges giving out tons of scholarships but money sports (Football and basketball) on hold, severely cuts revenue for colleges..

At some point something has to give
