Right now, despite geographical and topographical differences, we all experience pretty much the same weather: hot, humid and rather sticky. That will change in 6 to 10 weeks, dramatically.

Who is in for a poll?

Topics being:

> First frost for designated areas (based on our Member Map and not to be exclusive, but to just get some general geographic parameters tossed out there):
· Metwannabe and surrounding folks
· Webb and surrounding folks
· SD, Mack and surrounding folks
· Forsythe Snow and surrounding folks
· Delta Dog and surrounding folks
· Charlie and surrounding folks
· Brent
· Larry
· and the Far Southern Outpost

> First freeze for the designated areas

> First frozen precip for the designated areas

> First accumulating frozen precip for the designated areas

> Greatest one-event accumulation through April for the designated areas

And then …

> Last freeze for the designated areas

> Last frozen precip for the designated areas

> Last accumulating frozen precip for the designated areas

and any other "poll" topics ...

Just an idea, and if its worth a hill of beans, maybe Shawn or someone with the “power” and know-how can actually create and set up a poll; one vote per member which is final by September 30th.

Just a thought …

Hey Charlie - A ride in the jet for the overall winner?

What about SE Ridge in Indiana or wherever he may go next? ;)

Seriously, I like this idea to increase posting activity by having it include most areas of active posters and make for an interesting contest. So, thanks for proposing it. However, my experience tells me that the best chance for this to attract more than a couple of participants is to keep it simple and short. “KISS”. So, hopefully that is the direction that is taken in modifying the initial proposal.

Apparently the accuweather forums are shutting down, which is sad because they were like the big competitor to American.

I used to read their forums in combination with American before this site started up. Sad to see they are going away, but maybe if we get lucky a few will come here. Looks like most of them are headed for other boards or are making their own new one.

It just sucks because there are few active weather forums out there

I have not been over to American in a good while. The last time I did it was a ghost town. Is it still like that? I don't know why everyone in the SE forum there doesn't just come here. I guess they have more mets that post there, or at least they used to.

Former wrestler Jim Neidhart passed away last night. And it sounds like Aretha Franklin is gravely ill, too.

No, Brick, it isn’t a total ghost town. A good number of them, just like yourself and me (though I stopped posting there a few years ago), are the same folks. This includes CR, Mack, Phil (who hardly posts there now), Rosie, dsaur, Webb (who stopped posting there), Deltadog, NCSNOW, CadWedge, Shetley, Stormsfury, SERidge, arcc, Emerson, Greg, LithiaWx, NGTim, Simeon, Daculawx (though he hasn't posted here in a very long time). and others who I unintentionally left out as well as some who may post at both under different names. They aren’t going to suddenly stop posting there just because Brick says he doesn’t understand why they still post there. They don’t all think the same way as you or me or anyone else. Each person will make his or her own decision. You harping on it shouldn’t be necessary. The higher quality board here (imo) should be enough to get more over here though.

Definitely true. We have many members here that aren't on other boards because they filled up with trolls. I would rather not have the numbers American has just for the sake of numbers. I see it as quality over quantity here. We take care of trolls, while American filled up with them and they simply stopped caring. People will drift to other boards over time dependent on how that board suits them. If many fit them, then that's fine. If one fits them, that's also fine.

Yes, indeed, big isn't always better and is actually often worse. It can lead to board cockiness. That's something that needs to be watched here if it were to grow too large. It likely won't though since it is regionally based. The biggest turnoff there for me, despite the overlap with active members here, is what I consider the tendency for cliques to dominate too much there. Perhaps that's due to its large size though I think a lot of it is due to biased moderating. I still feel that a lot of this spilled over from their political forum (no civility, poor and biased moderation, practically no good discussions, juvenile name calling, profanity filled, little desire to work with the other side for a solution in the middle..have you ever been in there?) being that it became too dominant.

It also resulted from the small gated communities of IMBY microcosms that developed, rather than folks sharing in conversation about the bigger pictures in weather, e.g., what makes it, why something occurs when it does, and how a particular set up or system might have potential consequences to one or more locals, including but not limited to one a poster may live in; things 600 miles away may not directly impact a particular person, but they generally impact some who frequent here and, as we so often see in this rather large neighborhood, those are discussed robustly from afar with our sometimes geographically distant co-posters squarely in mind.
This, folks, IMHO, is the overriding difference ... ;)

Whereas we all talk about IMBY wx to some extent (I obviously talk about the big S, we talk about the Great Radiator, etc), which is normal for a wx BB and helps to keep it active, there is a subtle push here thanks to you (and I'm not just talking wiki, which you and Forsyth have selflessly been a big part of) as much as anyone that encourages us to talk much more than just about IMBY. In other words, I think the healthiest mix is a combo of IMBY and more general wx posts (like pattern, ENSO, tropical, global warming, solar, etc) along with nonwx categories like golf ;), other sports, weird music, banter, etc).

Please allow me to clarify ... IMBY is fun and normal, but it is not the driving force in these parts, nor is it anywhere near the dominant topic; rather we seem to have attracted a group that is generally interested in the who, what, when, where, how and why perspective, as opposed to the "if it ain't me" mantra that is espoused elsewhere ...
