Misc Sports Thread

I’ve had a lot of fun watching the Canes this year. Lot of respect for how the team handled adversity and the coach. This area is heavily college sports focused with divided rivalries, but only having one major pro team in Raleigh allowed us UNC/State/Duke fans to pull for one team. I know that sounds corny, but I don’t care. Lol

I’m a day 1 fan of the Hornets and Panthers. Hoping those franchises can someday replicate the success of the Canes. Who’d have thought the hockey team would turn out to be the most successful so far when they moved here in the 90's?

Still can't believe the Canes actually won the Cup. It's been a lot of heartbreak for Canes fans, from a decade-long playoff drought to 7 straight years of playoff exits. This team showed unbelievable fight and resilience, such as coming down 4-0 to tie the game in game 3 even though they lost. Truly a well-deserved championship, and the Canes did it without any big-name superstars while being well under the salary cap.

Look at what is going on during the world cup. People from all walks of life and different cultures coming together in a country the worldwide media has sold them is awful and racist. Americans adoring people from those other cultures they have been taught to fear. A new energy is washing over this planet for those who realize that hating the opposite side isn't the answer. The elites weren't counting on this but is awesome to witness! So much better than fighting over beliefs and indifferences

The irony is that the POTUS is always doing the opposite with his consistent encouragement of division! Always as it has never stopped since 2016! I’ve never seen one nearly this bad and can’t wait til it’s finally over.
Nothing new is suddenly happening with the World Cup. There have always been a large number of non-racist Americans.

Can you for once just enjoy the fact that people of different cultures are enjoying one another? It's such a joy to see these people marvel at this beautiful country and sad at the same time that so many irritable people that live here can't enjoy the positives even for one second. I mean it really is sad to see

Great win by the red white & blue!

Now to complain. Didn't realize the red card at the time meant losing a player for the next game and he was our leading scorer. I don't complain about refs often, but that decision was made by one ref and subject to his interpretation. It's weird he gets to make a decision affecting the next game in a knockout round, and there's no way to appeal? Think I'm beginning to know why there's so many complaints about FIFA and corruption. (Most of what I've heard is at the upper levels, but stuff like this gives me pause at the lower levels as well)

Some notable news:
LeBron James is leaving the Lakers and becoming a free agent
Jaylen Brown got traded to 76ers for Paul George.

As I said in my previous WC post, this was the first full soccer game I’ve ever watched in full due to only a few days ago suddenly getting interested after educating myself about the WC and its history. Thus, I also just this morning realized that the red card penalty, which caused the U.S. to have to play with one fewer player for the rest of the game, also means that player is suspended for the next game! And he (Balogun) is the U.S. leading scorer in this WC. Ouch!!

Any opinions about whether or not this red card was a fair call? I also just found out that the ref is from Brazil, the top WC country of all time based on WC wins (5) and a team still in this WC.

Yea and being 1 person down really affected the momentum, even though we scored afterwards.

I don’t think it was a fair call cause it didn’t look like he intended to seriously injure, which is my understanding of the red card? Just a really intense play. Most commentators I’ve heard agree. I’ll admit it’s been all US commentators though, so I’d be interested in the international consensus. Would be interested on your thoughts as well.

After thinking about it, I don’t *think* it was an intentional slight. But mercy who knows?--the way this system is setup, it certainly LOOKS suspicious. It just seems off that one ref has that much discretion to affect the next game and there’s no way to appeal. That last one is what gets me. If it was intentional, we have no way of fighting it. That’s different than how most (all?) sports leagues are run.

1. I also don’t at all think it was intentional.
2. I feel my thoughts are somewhat on the worthless side since I’m brand new in getting into this. But it does seem overly harsh and the ref is Brazilian. Just sayin’!
