Pattern May 2026

The sun is making an appearance here southeast of Lake Wheeler in Raleigh. I hope that can stir up some instability and get some showers and thunderstorms going here later this afternoon and tonight. The temperature has climbed up to 75 degrees.

That's crazy. There are places near you with 5-6 inches plus of rain.

I've sometimes questioned the rain gauge (though I've been told that gauges are accurate), but I can tell the truth on yesterday and say that the severe thunderstorm mostly whiffed me. I did pick up rain, but not the worst of it.

I have an Augusta address, but Burke County is probably walking distance for me on a good day if I wanted to try, so I'm really not in the city or even close.

Ok that may be why then. The storms seemed to be right around the city and on up into SC towards Greenwood, Columbia, and Saluda.

Per Cocorahs reporting stations, there’s nothing close to 5-6” near Augusta for the 48 hours ending at 7AM today though I do see a 3.37” at one place in Columbia county, GA:

24 hrs ending 5/23 7AM: heaviest of 1.82”-2.65” (all in Columbia county)

24 hrs ending 7AM today: heaviest 0.72-0.78” in Columbia county and 0.68” in Aiken county

Its been about 48 hours since the sun has come out here and its only gotten up to 70 so far today. Although it looks like the edge may not be too far from here. Hope we can get some solid rain later as well.
Got my wish! Just picked up 0.6” in the last 20 minutes. Easily the heaviest downpour we’ve had all year. Storm to the west is trying to turn east a little so we might not be done yet.

Nice! Did you add to your 1.2” from the additional developing showers or did they fizzle? I’m curious because I know someone who lives not too far away from you (other side of I-85 S of Mall of GA).
Im actually about 7-8 miles east of the mall now. Used to live right near there. Picked up another 0.1” from those showers so 1.3” for the day. Based on radar estimates the heaviest may have been back towards the mall.

Theres actually another cell coming in from the west, but it looks like its gonna barely miss to the north.

Do you have a radar estimated precip map for this evening that includes the corridor from the Mall of GA south along GA 20 to ~5 miles S of I-85? My friends live ~2 miles S of I-85. TIA

Best I got is the 3 hour rainfall from about 6-9 PM on radarscope. Pretty sure it tends to be a bit higher than reality, but it shows the footprint of highest totals pretty well. Purple is estimated 1”+ darker blue is 2”+. Hope that helps!

Major rain hole in this area. I’m sitting around 0.75” for the event. This is since 5/20. Hoping we get out of the shaft zone with next round.

This illustrates the area south of Atlanta that is struggling to get meaningful drought relief. I sure hope it improves, but I don't think it will, based on model output. We may get over 1.5" total, but we really need the 3" to 4" to get our soil moisture improved.

Headed up I-26 and there is -still- in situ wedge hanging up against the last 15 miles before the mountains. Full fog and mist, but at least temps up to 66F. Interested to see if it’s clearer in Henderson co

Overcast but skies brightened and mist cleared the moment I entered the French broad valley. Another 5min down the road and there’s sun trying to shine. Clockwork
