Snowfall Forecast Contest Thread (January 31, 2026)
For: The MACHINE LEARNING MAULER STORM
I am putting up $50 to the winner. Winner take all. DM me (@griteater) if you would like to donate to increase the pot.
Here's how it will work:
Post in this thread your total storm snowfall (includes snow and sleet) for each of the following cities:
Columbia, SC (CAE)
Charlotte, NC (CLT)
Raleigh, NC (RDU)
Greenville, NC β this will be from the COOP Site GREENVILLE (all caps β they have a history of reporting snow). We will ask WeatherNC to measure for us as a backup if he is willing and able. Important to note that this is Greenville, North Carolina <NOT> Greenville, South Carolina
I will take the differential of your forecast and the actual result (absolute value) for each city and sum the total. Lowest differential total summed from all sites is the most accurate, and the winner.
Example:
Columbia - Actual 2.0 / Forecast 2.1 (Diff is 0.1)
Charlotte - Actual 3.0 / Forecast 2.9 (Diff is 0.1)
Raleigh - Actual 4.0 / Forecast 8.0 (Diff is 4.0)
Greenville - Actual 5.0 / Forecast 5.0 (Diff is 0.0)
Total Diff for this forecaster is 4.2. Lowest total Diff wins
Rules:
1. You must post your forecast in this thread (no DM'd forecasts will be accepted)
2. Deadline for forecast submission is Friday (1/30) at 2:00 PM EST β I will print off a hardcopy of the entries at that time.
3. You can edit your forecast as many times as you like up until the deadline. Just edit your original post.
4. Calculated snow & sleet will come from the airport sites indicated (exception: GREENVILLE COOP site for Greenville, NC)
5. Amounts should be entered to 1 decimal point / otherwise will be rounded to 1 decimal point.
6. I will payout the prize money via PayPal / Venmo, whatever. If another option is needed, we will figure it out. Recipient will be asked to confirm receipt of funds via a post in the thread.
7. This is open to anyone who can post here (Mets, Non-Mets etc.)
8. If there is a tie, the winner will be the poster that had the closest differential at the city with the most snow. 2nd tiebreaker is for the city that received the 2nd most snow, and on down the line. If still tied after going thru each city, we will split the proceeds among the winners.
You can copy/paste this as a template to post your totals:
Columbia, SC (CAE) β 0.0
Charlotte, NC (CLT) β 0.0
Raleigh, NC (RDU) β 0.0
Greenville, NC β 0.0
Hope you can join in and good luck!
