Misc General Banter Thread

I'm researching/shopping for a solar powered generator. The ole faithful gas one I have been using for over a qtr century is nearing retirement age. Looking for one that can be charged multiple ways in addition to solar. 3000-5000 watt output would be ample enough. Anyone have one to recomend or not recomend give a holler. TIA

Everything I see/ looks like China Knockoffs

Jackery is popular down here.

I'm still hopeful some of us (..including me) can get frost Sunday morning. Most forecast and modeling keep lows around 40 for most outside the mountains. But dew points will be colder. It will come down to where the high ends up overnight (central Va??) and if the winds can calm (decouple).

Got to kill some of these mosquitoes.

Edit: Didn't mean to put this in Banter.

No offense but cold weather=dead bugs biggest myth there is

But what’s not a myth imho is the almost complete lack of insects that are actually flying around even way down here in winter.
They hibernate but don't die. As soon as you have a warm day they are out and about, but I digress. I don't think it's that big of a deal and was just giving falls a little hard time

Thanks. I understand. But I was wondering if SOME of them actually get killed, especially if there’s a sudden or early first freeze and they’re still exposed?

As someone with a turf grass and plant pest degree your both right some flying insects do die during freezes but not all of them

@SD or other staff,
Now that all major globals for the first time have it close enough to the E coast to have significant effect on a portion of it, would it be possible at some point soon if the threat continues to have next week’s E coast threat in its own new thread? I’m asking because posts about it have been in 3 different threads (for good reason). TIA.

Make sure to send a lot of snow pictures this winter !
I’ll have to join Mr. Tarheel and Brent in the Outside of the SE thread! At least I’ll still be considered in the southern tier of the US haha!

So uhhhh
Won’t be in Virginia much longer!!!
Flagstaff soon!!

I mean you'll be further south than you are now.

Congrats on your new job!

Drizzle does make a good point since you’ll be further N than only ~half of us instead of 90% of us like now. But at ~7K feet, you’ll be higher than nearly 100% of us!

He'll get more snow than 100% of us since Flagstaff averages 90" of snow !

@Tarheel1 after all these years I’m finally gonna do it. I’m headed to Calhoun Falls to pick up 60 Thuja Green Giants in the morning. They’re already 5’ tall. Getting them for $12 a pop from a nice family nursery! I’m going to space them 10-11’ apart down the road line. Any tips?20261016_160758.jpeg

Congratulations on achieving your dream career! Be sure to keep in touch with our board.
I’ll be here a lot don’t worry. This board was pivotal to teaching me meteorology and I thank all of y’all for the support.

I did a quick search on Flagstaff climo and saw a quote from a local on reddit that said “the best snow is between Jan and May”. 🤣

Would be great to live in any place to test that opinion.
Trust me, when I first learned they averaged 90 inches it was the easiest decision to include them as a place I would apply. 🤣

50 of them will be dead within 3 years. Only slightly kidding. They can do well in wetter places on a property but overall I've seen way too many of those things drop dead for no apparent reason. Keep them well watered and hope for the best.

Jimmy, you did good! Great price!!
Only real tips are probably obvious to you, but 10’ spacing sounds good. Lots of mulch and an inch of water on them a week, for at the very least a year. I think they can grow about a foot a year . Not many pests at all. You don’t have to fertilize when you plant, cause the fertilizer you get in the pots will get them started! Maybe fertilizer in the next spring and maybe a dose every spring and lots of sun and they should thrive! Good luck
