Deer are a common sight in my neighborhood and sometimes in my yard. This year I'm seeing lots of turkeys for the first time. They have all been hens and if they show up in my yard around Thanksgiving, watch out! I'm just kidding, that could get me in big time trouble with the NC Wildlife Department. I'll have to wait until Turkey season in the Spring.

I'm genuinely confused. Logic says it hasn't but it just doesn't feel the same. Younger guys say the same. My only educated guess is whatever climate shift we hit in late 2020/early 2021 increased our sunshine hours around here and we're just not getting as much sunlight filtered through clouds as before. Maybe it'll swap back around. I do miss those crazy volcano sunsets we had for awhile after the Tonga eruption.

Yep, it’s tough. Hopefully it will settle out. I remember the summer of 2008, I was living in Pensacola and had a 26’ offshore boat with a 200 gallon tank. I was obsessed with tuna fishing at the rigs. I had my first real adult job back then (commercial diving) and vividly remember splitting gas with 4 friends and putting $700 total in it after a trip. Gas was around $4 a gallon that summer. If I remover right it crashed out below $2 the next year probably due to the financial crisis.

The difference between now and then was it didn’t seem like everything else was so expensive, mainly food and housing. I also didn’t have any responsibilities other than myself. I do feel for the younger kids finishing school now who didn’t have the advantages some of us older guys (I’m only 43) had, namely being able to buy homes for really cheap and then sell them down the road with plenty of equity. Definitely gave us a bit of a leg up. Hopefully things level back off, it’s a different world it seems like over the past 6 years or so. I miss those days of no phones, no worries. I did love old school forums like this though back then, and still much prefer them to social media.

I feel it much more in fall and winter. It may just be the getting older thing, but even when it is cold, the sun just feels hotter and even more so through car windows.

Maybe just being older and slightly heavier helps a person absorb more solar energy or something.

It may be a game, but its a preseason game. The official start of Hurricane hockey is 9/29 (at home of course) where the championship banner/flag gets officially placed in its proper place. :)

Duke Energy is asking customers in North Carolina and South Carolina to voluntarily reduce electricity use from 2-8 p.m. today, Sept. 18, to help reduce demand on the power grid during the day’s peak period.

Customers can help by taking simple steps during this peak period:

  • Raise your thermostat to the highest comfortable setting.
  • Avoid using major appliances such as washing machines, clothes dryers and dishwashers.
  • Limit use of electric ranges and ovens, which can add heat to your home and increase air conditioning demand.
  • Electric vehicle owners: Charge overnight, when demand is lower.
“Above-average heat puts pressure on the system during peak hours,” said Kendal Bowman, president of Duke Energy’s utility operations in North Carolina. “Small actions during the late afternoon and early evening can help reduce strain on the grid and support reliable service for everyone.”

“We recognize it is inconvenient to reduce electric use, but it makes a real difference," said Tim Pearson, president of Duke Energy’s utility operations in South Carolina. “We’re using every available resource to meet demand so power keeps flowing to our communities.”

Whereas some (many?) may not think this sounds too good, I’m amazed he’s able to even try this at 95! I don’t think most at that age have nearly this much energy. The man never stops and kudos for him for making the most out of his life doing fun things. Don’t forget that he briefly went into space at age 90. Live long and prosper!

I was there and they got only a few clouds from the outer portion with no notable increase in wind. They and much of N GA were fortunate it didn’t go further SW than the actual track. SAV had a scare initially when it was still well out to sea. I think they were under a H watch and my parents may have evacuated. SAV ended up with only fairly minor effects thankfully!

If I recall, there was considerable uncertainty 5 days in advance from S GA to NC on where it would go. I remember GA being in the watch. About 1-2 days before landfall, most thought it would curve NW with Myrtle Beach the bullseye. But of course the dang thing stubbornly kept course dead on to Charleston.

Hugo was huge in diameter and hit at high tide w/ significant surge all the way to Surfside Beach,SC. Believe every pier from Charleston to Oak Island, NC got wiped out. Not remembered outside of the Carolinas much today but was a big deal at the time. (I think Andrew in 92 ended up overshadowing it from a memory standpoint)
