Misc General Banter Thread

I haven't actually been to this general area, but I fell in love with the area that is to the west of it as a 14 year old.

I'll actually say that I miscounted and I have been to North Carolina 5 times and I've passed through it three times for the GSMNP and Johnson City, TN when my dad wanted to see a mountain bald. I didn't count Asheville when I initially rambled on this because it was honestly slightly disappointing. I might not mind going back though at some time because I've had a new interest develop (Biltmore Estates, there might be a gardens there?).

5 days from here will be the 3rd time to the same general area of SW NC ha. I'm familiar enough with Cashiers that I actually even have the two restaurants for dinner picked out, one being a replay from 2020 as I really liked the salmon BLT lol. I do wish I can move here, but with the way I see it, this is a vacation area and while I probably do have enough money to facilitate a move, can I really feasibly go towards a vacation area?

I do need to get out of this job though and in a best-case scenario, away from my childhood town (due to something that I'd prefer to keep private), and I was reminded of the former today. I like my manager, but with the system that we have...sigh, it's not worth it to ask for help if it's going to be a 1 person team for a couple hours now (it's typically 3, but one person is having surgery and the other had an appointment).
The Biltmore gardens are very nice and add a nice accent to the house.

I find my area pretty good for cost and ease of access to the mountains. I’m 40 minutes from Ellijay on two lane roads but far enough away to avoid high prices and tourists.

So painful watching heavy rain within 5 miles of you and knowing you will not see any of it and you watch it slide away...

Here’s the view (our hover drone) from the property we are closing in on at DuPont Forest. Cedar Mountain, Nc

Didn’t know if you guys knew this:

The title of the wettest county east of the Mississippi River generally belongs to Transylvania in NC.

Shouldn’t have to worry about storms.

Man, if the storms hold off when I want to do my outdoor activities, this is going to be great. Ahhh...

(Cashiers, NC NWS forecast)

Sunday
A chance of showers before 8am, then a chance of showers and thunderstorms between 8am and 2pm, then showers and possibly a thunderstorm after 2pm. High near 78. Chance of precipitation is 80%.

Monday
Showers and thunderstorms likely. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 75. Chance of precipitation is 60%. (note: Gorges near 2k feet is probably still around 80, but that will be much better than the consistent 90+, and this is overall setting up perfectly as we'll be cooling off in general and the storms are going to help the waterfalls!)

I've simplified things from where they probably initially were (except I might toss in showing a friend/old schoolmate the Cashiers sliding rock at the very least), but I honestly would be happy with a week tour in this general area. I should go see more of Highlands and Brevard. Frankly for my case, while Cades Cove was nice, this area tops the GSMNP.

Highlands is beautiful. I’ve ridden through there several times though it’s been many years.

The time has come. Have any of you old timers (55+) ever said.... I'm moving to the weather that I want. We are looking at property in Dupont (Cedar Mountain, NC. Close to Brevard and Pisgah too) at 3000 feet. Viewed it several times. Even pulled up the weather here in CLT vs there countless times.

I love the mountain biking, hiking and summer temps plus the opportunity for more "Winter" during actual winter :)

Buy the property and then building.

Anyone else taken that leap with weather ...somewhat in mind?

Enjoy the broiler!
I’m of the 50+ community, and in 2020, I made the move to the great state of Iowa, basically for the weather and a few other things! Home of corn,🌽, corn sweats, Busch light lovers, and funky Canadian accents, you betcha! And I never have to go a winter without snow and cold!! 🤘

TWC needs new blood. All the hot ladies aren’t so hot anymore. 😢
I don’t even watch anymore! The hotties I can remember are: Jeanetta Jones, Kelly Cass, that Kate one that R_C liked, Alexandria Wilson, and bringing up the rear, Felicia Combs! I like my weather girls like a 🧱 💩 🏠! 😂

I might jinx it haha but technically despite all the struggles it's snowed every winter I've been here(5 winters now)...

I went 5 winters in Dallas without seeing a flake! I dunno it's just weird how my mood has totally changed when I moved up here. Now it's like I can't imagine a winter without it even though I don't think we've ever even had one. There's some with barely dustings for sure but not one with zero

And oh yeah our warmest winter ever still got down to 10 degrees which is pretty dang cold haha

Oh US 64 is pretty special once you get around Whiteside Mountain (have been, was 14 years old):

I've ridden all the way up to Franklin once on this road for the Fun Factory. I thought at one point that taking 64 out of Cashiers might be on the agenda on the way back, but I finally decided last week that it's too aggressive of an idea. I'm definitely going to need to do this ride again, at least partially, but for now this time it'd be for a waterfall driving tour.

I’ve had measurable snow here in Florida 2 out of the last 4 years. Y’all are just too far north.

Break from rain today then tomorrow some storms. FINALLY!
But we got
NothingConchShellGIF.gif

from yesterday's storm.

After years of mountain biking fun… We made the bid on our friends property and they accepted. Pretty pumped. Some interesting takes for those that didn’t know about the DuPont area near brevard, nc (cedar mountain, nc)
1- already mentioned that it’s the wettest county east of the Mississippi.
2- it’s in the lee side screw zone too. Odd! It also can get NWSF if it breaks containment (1-2 inches if TN border is getting raked.
Bizarre topography and micro meteorology…
3- the ghost lightning bugs. I never knew about them all these years !

Buying land now and hope in a couple years to build ;)

Good for you! Me and my parents are relocating due to the lease termination on our old house.

Pretty good chance the house is about to be split by a strong and severe thunderstorm again with me stuck driving through the strong storm.

Disappointing. But I am down to a half day at least before I'm going to have 5 days off, with one full day spent at least at 2k ft, if not 3500+ in SW NC! Hopefully the rain holds off just enough for my crew to see some good stuff.

Cedar mountain is a nice little area. Access to DuPont/pisgah/caesars head and the conveniences of Brevard. Get ready to learn NWFS flurries that don’t stick

We've already made the decision to leave SC once the kiddo is done with school which won't be that far off scary to say. Been here all my life but it's time to move on. Between the over building, lack of government services/infrastructure and ticking property tax time bomb once the boomers pass sway it's not a hard choice. We're looking at western Pennsylvania within about 45 minutes of Pittsburgh.

Heck even my parents were too far north and they are south of 20 in Alabama. It was crazy for them to barely get a dusting combined in two different historic storms on the coast. I was glad I was not there haha

It just goes to show how random it is around here and sometimes just is pure luck
