Misc General Banter Thread

For those who have been around a long time like myself in the old days it felt like everything was dc centric. Nothing mattered unless it involved dc/the mid Atlantic....drove a lot of us crazy. Its not that bad and i wouldn't ever insult the nc posters by comparing them to the dc weenies but there are some similarities. I think it has a lot do do with they are just more vocal and frankly there hasn't been anything worth talking about for everywhere else. We haven't even been able to get digital snow or ice in fantasy range in ga or sc yet.
I see zero difference between the DC/Mid-Atlantic weenies and the NC weenies. 😉

As a north Alabama located poster I wish I could join there to participate in the Tennessee Valley forum. Carver's Gap and a couple of other posters there are very knowledgeable and that subforum is not NC dominated.

I have tried 3 separate times to join with different emails, the first two never were approved, the third was, and I was active 3 days and inexplicably banned without making a single post! I have no idea what's up with the approval process/moderation over there. Thankful for this community, GaWx being a good one I see in both locations.
I've had the same exact issue there before.

To the point where I’m gonna stop looking at the gfs. Seems like every cycle changes dramatically. Can’t even see clarity past 5 days.

Who else isn’t feeling the Christmas spirit knowing there’s a big warm up coming for Christmas? Kinda depressing but I know weather ain’t that deep lol

I mean considering how cold it's been nonstop since Thanksgiving day I don't mind a few days in the 60s. Definitely noticing a lack of Christmas lights this year though.

It's not even about the weather to me(not like we haven't been warm before that's not really news) this whole lead up to Christmas has been just bizarre

Even where i work where Christmas is usually this huge deal it's just very underwhelming so far. Hardly any decorations or lights driving around

I mean I'm sitting here like wow in 6 days it's over

Unfortunately layoffs have put a damper on many things this season. Just this region of SENC and NESC is has had a few thousand layoffs. That's a lot of families affected.

There's a palpable anxiety even among people that don't usually pay attention to national politics and other events of that nature.

I don't think we get above climatological average for temperature at Florence SC by months' end. Even with the advertised warmup coming I'm still seeing below normal days in the forecast from NWS.

If it plays out as forecasted by my NWS, that 70 on Christmas Eve will be the first 70 in about 29 days/close to a full month.

It’s just kind of hilarious for me. Ended up having torch cancelled early in December, multiple gray and raw days, and then bam, you get to Christmas and it’s warm.

I love snow and such I really do but honestly in protest of just how bad this appears to be I think it would be funny if that Aleutian ridge just stayed where it’s at for the entire month of January and put the entire United States like +8/+20 for the month of January. With the entire state of Alaska -8/-20 for the month. I wouldn’t even be mad. It rarely snows here anyway and I can drive to Banner Elk to catch a marginal 32.4 degree snow event to get my fix

I may be a victim of recency bias but this is as bad as you’ll see it heading into a new year. Where it actually counts. It’s so bad that you can’t even tell the doom and gloomers to stop the doom and gloom because they’re actually right. Normally if the trough dumps in the west “meh” ok it’ll dislodge at some point and come this way and we’ll get the remnants of some cold air to work with. Well the teleconnections are so ugly that the trough can’t even get onshore in the west. The eastern US is 3rd in line once this thing finally budges. I will say it was nice to see that Aleutian ridge dislodge tonight at the tail end of the GFS operational run. Even if it was hour 370. I mean good grief. We still have PLENTY of time but damn I needed to get that off my shoulders. The frustration is justified IMG_6196.jpeg

I keep trying to tell people in Texas that there is no guarantee the pattern ever flips... They are convinced it will

Yeah I'm glad I'm up here instead because it probably will snow at some point but even here there's been really horrible years where it doesn't even snow more than a half inch. I can tell you right now nobody would be happy with that here if it happened again. They already complain about the lack of snow and we did pretty good last year

This is what I don’t understand. So much of this board lives within a few hours of places like Banner Elk where it will certainly snow. Literally anytime anyone wants they can jump in their car and drive there. No excuses. Better yet, you can hop on a plane and be anywhere with snow in just a few hours, literally anywhere. Anyone on this board can grab a flight to Boston for penny's on the dollar for a day or two and rent a car and drive into New Hampshire literally any day of the week. You don’t even have to stay overnight if you don’t want to. I think so many just don’t leave their 20 mile radius but a few times a year and would rather whine. I’ve been to DC, Miami, and Orlando just in the past two weeks and it almost feels strange to not have any plans to be more than two hours away the next week or two. Anyone can do whatever they want.

I was just now looking back at posts/images during the bigtime gloom and doom of Dec 2021, when there was a similarly persistent strong -PNA during La Niña. Most posts had either a mad or sad tone.

Four years ago today:
This is where we are folks. No cold air to be found anywhere outside the far NC and NW per the GFS. Looks like the CAD keeps us from spontaneous combustion so that’s good at least.

Wichita Falls, TX made it to 91*F yesterday.

This is near the OK border I might add, not deep SW Texas ..

From Brent 12/25/21:
December to Remember... I'm doing this hike in shorts ?

A Mack chair post on 12/26/21: a dusting of sleet…for Mack this was pitiful, just pitiful:

So, we were here before in a horrendous -PNA Dec during Niña just 4 years ago. And that was much worse with a torch practically the entire month! Little did we know then, much colder and 2” of snow was to fall at GSO just one week later. And that was just the start with FOUR 1”+ snows there that Jan as the PNA turned strongly +!

So, keep hope alive and realize that models can’t see that far ahead reliably. No matter what the Bleaklies show, keep hoping for a sudden change to a +PNA Jan as occurred in early Jan 2022 and has occurred often in Jan over the last 40 years during -ENSO after a depressingly solid -PNA Dec!

Quite the brutal pattern setting up for the southeast for cold and snow lovers. Not sure what it’ll take to shake it up. This isn’t going to to be one of those patterns that’s easy to shake up either. Could take quite a long time

Yes it could. It sure looks like it right now. January sure not looking good starting out and is still up in the air right now. These models are all over the place from day to day and run to run. I know one thing I wouldn't sleep on February this year. We are way past due for a cold and snowy February and even more overdue for a ice storm. I hate to be in waiting mode but when are we not in the southeast as much as I don't like it. It's always like this in my 43 years of living in the southern foothills and I have had to learn to live with it as much as it kills me to have to wait for my favorite season each year.
