Misc General Banter Thread

I would like to see some date for this. The political polarization I can certainly buy with the Vietnam war going on. However, I find hippies a touch milder than what I would call the leftist movement of today.

Im not sure I buy you’ve never heard of Charlie Kirk, though you’re certainly welcome to make that claim about you and your orbit. I’m not sure what defines spending to much time in the political sphere encompasses, but my general sense that would include a 22 year old kid engulfed in discord who just assassinated a very popular political campaigner and debater, who also built a multimillion dollar company. I don’t particularly enjoy watching debates with political activists and ignorant college students, but the guy was everywhere.

The only thing in recent years that holds a candle to 1968 would be the events of January 6th. In 1967/1968 those types of events were happening every couple of months. A lot of it was Vietnam related, a lot more of it was civil rights related.

Social media has ironically made it more difficult in recent years to get a good judge of where the real political discourse is in this country and abroad. There are so many people out there trying to make a buck. Real, substantive policy discussion does not happen on social media and I think folks would be wise to understand that. I've worked for both D and R campaigns and still run in those circles to a degree and I can say for certain the "performance artists" you see on Capitol Hill and various state houses are not driving the discussion when the cameras are off. The largely boring business of government marches on no matter what hot topic is swirling around the edges.

What the Kirk assassination does, along with the assassination of Speaker Hortman and numerous other politically motivated actions does, is put a chilling effect on those willing to participate in the political process at all levels. Those that are willing to participate and have the means to do so don't necessarily reflect the electorate in a way we haven't seen since the late 19th century. These problems are fixable to a degree and couple be done quickly with reapportionment which is something we haven't done since the 1930s.

January 6th was nothing compared to the George Floyd riots that lasted months and months with millions in property damage and countless murders. Its just glorified due to the location and political ramifications, which is exactly why the intel agencies and FBI had informants working the crowd to influence some of the 2k or so that were there to go inside the capitol and be escorted around by capitol police. Thankfully there was only one death that day.

We can certainly agree on your third paragraph about social media.

Hopefully this is fixable, but I don't believe it is. I will try and be optimistic though.

@Rain Cold get your pumpkin spice latte orders ready
Got 'em! You know what's funny, I dont really even like them all that much (I do like some of the Christmas drinks - althoughthey are super expensive). But they smell good and I like seeing all that stuff in the stores. I am so ready for the heat to be gone!
