A Texas/OK/western LA thread would be good, but we may not have many posters who know anything snow related.

I think separate state threads are too many threads, but also agree having one whole discussion thread can be cumbersome. A good compromise might be breaking up into several states. Maybe AL/GA/TN in one, and SC/NC/VA in the other for example.

Seems like a good compromise, especially for these possible board wide storms.

I voted for states but would rather keep it one thread or East or a west of the mountains. Being from Tennessee I love to listen to the input but unless it’s a great southern super slider what works for middle Tennessee doesn’t often work for North Carolina. Plus they may be both 2 of the toughest places to forecast snow in my opinion.

The only objection I have to lumping all states in there together is that folks tend not to post entire maps. They'll only post NC/SC or MS/AL. (But usually only NC/SC. Just sayin) Everybody wants to see what could be headed for their own backyards. Please, if you would, remember to post the entire map.

Waaay back in the day before this specific weather forum was born, it was the abbreviated map picture postings of yore that made me figure out how and where to access them and start to read them myself. Maybe a little starvation is good for the mind; Pivotal and Tropical Tidbits are great, free jumping off points.
I’m not saying you’re wrong in asking for full maps, just saying that the desire for more info can encourage growth and learning too.

Yup. And who in MS/AL will even post useful stuff? Especially at crunch time. No one is popping into mind. Sorry if I missed someone, but I have a bias toward Atlanta/GA.

It seems the quality posts lean toward the NC folks. I know there are a few exceptions, but I think many folks already here know this. And we’ll go to the NC threads in addition to our state/region. Worse, new folks won’t know this and think it’s “dead here”.

I know it’s a little annoying when things lean toward a NC bias. But I’m grateful for the NC folks. And of course the few quality posters outside of NC (and didn’t previously live there).

I see what your saying, but I didn't perceive the option of splitting actual storm threads by regions(VA, NC, SC and GA,TN, AL, MS) as meaning somebody from the other region not being allowed to read or post in the other region's storm thread. It's more about cutting down on some of region specific chatter or breakdowns that mean something totally different for the other region(s). Plus with the 'Quote' feature, if a poster reads good info from one region's storm thread that could affect or shed light on changes for a different region, it's easy to reply or add to that post in the different region's storm thread.

I don't like splitting into regions or states (within the SE). I like the idea of threads for Models, Discussion, Observations per event with the separate monthly outlook thread.

Fair points. And we might have an answer to what happens if this continues to trend dry for our friends in the carolinas. Hope not.

Maybe it would inspire others to take the lead in other areas?

Personally, I think the general forum UX/UI is more the problem. It’d be cool if someone rethought things and made something new (but not social media or Reddit). It’s too clunky and esoteric. (Edit: Or discord. Ya need something without so much friction).

Was a day I’d grab that bull by the horns, but… I’m older and way too busy with job. And then there is the monetization side of things. These days, it’s a huge ask to build something from the ground up without a business model.

Tapatalk has cornered the market with its “good enough” bolted on, clunky, stagnant and buggy AF solution. So here we are trying to make the best with what have that’s “free”. Not enough folks willing to drop money on something to make a career out of it.

Hope everyone sees snow!

Personally, I like the UI layout here better than Discord - but I get it, just different opinions

Yeah, I’m a fan of message boards and this UI in particular. I think the site looks clean and nice.

As far as the threads, I can see there are positives and negatives to both, but splitting them would “divide” the community up a bit IMO. Of course, that’s easy for me to say as a person from the dominant geographic region of this forum, so if a majority of members from AL/MS/TN wanted a breakaway thread, I’d be fine with that.

I agree with the clean and nice. To be clear, I’m not saying anything negative about the amazing folks who made this site. I’m talking about forums in general. And the open source that they are all built on.

All the folks here have done an amazing job with what is available.

There are several knowledgeable folks in the western part of the southeast who post things here. Parker easily comes to mind.

Saying there is an NC bias is a huge understatement. I get that there are more of them here than us, but I'd like to see more state-centered interaction, even if it's for one storm only.
