When you think about it, much of the US is lucky (or unlucky) depending on your perspective, to get as much cold and snow as we do given our pretty low latitude. Even Minneapolis is only halfway between the Equator and North Pole. Minneapolis is at about the same latitude as Northern Italy. The south is the same latitude as Northern Africa.

Brad Panovich 2014 Vlog from the Feb 2014 Winter Storm
2 to 3 days from occurring where models were too warm, and GFS won over Euro.

The February 2014 storm was decent for RDU. We got about 5" of snow with 0.2-0.3" of glaze ice on top. I doubt this upcoming system will be nearly as cold since this storm had below freezing temperatures for much of the event.

What was so special about the feb 14th storm that caused a riff in the current storm thread? Ive seen posters reference storms going back to the 1930's with no issues, but the feb 14th storm appears to have more in common to reference than the 80 years ago storms? What am i missing?? Did that feb 14th storm cause a lot of issues?

It trended colder at the last second. For example, Columbia was supposed to be an ice storm with ice rain mixed. 36 hours out, the CAD trended much colder and it turned into a sleet storm, areas to the West and South ended up with a devastating ice storm.

All I remember about the February 2014 storm is that we were supposed to get a crippling ice storm and it ended up being not bad at all.

What up wit dat day 3, yo?

But why are other historic storms okay to discuss in the thread but not that particular one?

Same here, we lucked out imby and the air was colder than progged... 25 miles away was like an inch of ice... while we got sleet. WHEW

Because the CAD was stronger.. Colder temps just above. That's why Jim Cantore left Columbia and went to Augusta, because the catastrophic ice storm forecasted shifted to the South.

Glen Burns was hyping up 2014 as being BIBLICAL! Ended up just getting 2 inches snow, half inch of sleet and .1 ZR. Not too bad

Yeah it wasn't nearly as eventful for my area as the January 2014 storm was. Maybe due to the snow just a couple weeks earlier meteorologists felt it was necessary to hype the storm even more.

Queing Mack's melt down by 00z tonight in 3 .. 2 ... right now its fresh cold, soon it will be healing skies.

THE HUMANITY.

Seriously beginning to wonder if it will ever do anything in Columbia again winter weather wise. Feels like eternity since we've got to join in with the fun..

In fact, it's been since the Feb 2014, that was the last time Lexington and Richland county has been under a Winter storm warning... Sad.

As is the case with other winter storms, Feb. 2014 will be remembered on a case by case basis.

I wasn't at home then and what I actually remember with the snow part of it is round two actually probably busted. Some absurd totals were being thrown around for what the main event was and that got cut down a bunch by freezing rain as far north as far NW GA iirc (I wasn't up there but was south of there in Rome). But for round 1 I ended up picking up about 4" and then round two was honestly probably the same, maybe 5" at most. So if you didn't get the round one snow, this event didn't live up to what it was hyped to be (which was absurd anyway).

But down at home? Absolutely smashed by a massive ice storm. I think the worst of the ice part of it was honestly mainly east central Georgia (I'd have to check to be sure). The images that came from it from my dad were insane. They lost power for a little over a week.
