Misc General Banter Thread

In case y’all don’t know the details, the 1974 experiment to try year-round DST in the US was a disaster due to children being killed going to school due to darkness. It was supposed to be tried for two winters, but was stopped after the first winter and that was that.

@Brent

That was part of the reason. The other was simply complaints people felt like they were living in permanent darkness with the late sunrises and (still) early sunsets due to the season. We tend to forget that those of us living north of around I-20 wouldn't get an "extra" hour of winter daylight in the evenings due to the low sun angle. People seem to have the idea it'll be like summer with a long twilight period instead of the off switch we have in winter.

Time *zones* are political, ergo DST. What I mean by that is the way we have time zones set up only somewhat reflects where they actually should be based on geography. If we aligned them as they should be it would cause all sorts of headaches with more metro areas being split among other issues.

Haha China apparently has one time zone... 🤣

But I get it I grew up as a kid on the Central Eastern time border zone in Alabama Georgia for a bit and it was always a confusing mess. It's still to this day with my parents known as Georgia time 🤣

Like I said if they ever actually pick one year round I'll be very shocked

But yeah do people not realize how short the days are in the winter up north. There's only so much you can do

Alabama would still be dark by 6 in the winter even on DST. The eastern edge of the time zones are rough

I'm not sure how I feel about this; I'm not sure who is dumber, the ChatGPT users or the brainiacs who thought this actually needed a study to confirm.....

Even though average temps don’t peak until another month or so, it’s nice to know that starting tomorrow we are headed in the right direction and on our way towards winter !

From GSP:

SHORT TERM /SATURDAY NIGHT THROUGH MONDAY/...
As of 145 PM Fri: Upper anticyclone will continue to build over the
eastern CONUS Sunday and Monday. PWATs will remain below climo.
Low-level moisture flux will be weak although winds will be southerly
at times, particularly in the afternoons. Temperatures will warm
under building thicknesses and airmass modification. Dewpoints will
trend a little higher as well, although they still should mix and
have some mitigating impact on heat index. Some Piedmont spots
nonetheless will see values in the 97-102 range each day. Still think
a few isolated showers/storms may be able to develop diurnally over
the mountain ridges, but otherwise the fcst remains dry thru Monday.
Pulse-storm microburst threat would be the main concern if any storms
are able to get tall enough.

.LONG TERM /MONDAY NIGHT THROUGH FRIDAY/...
As of 200 PM Fri: Anticyclone is still progged to retrograde and
weaken slightly Tuesday into late week but will remain the dominant
factor in our weather. Lapse rates will remain poor under the ridge,
as one might expect. A quasi-stationary front and zone of higher PWAT
is seen on the northern periphery of the ridge, representative of the
"ring of fire". Slight height falls, and associated passage of a
trough thru eastern Canada Wed-Fri, lead some model runs to depict
that frontal zone sinking southward to our vicinity by Thu, and in
some cases as early as Wed, resulting in an uptick in PoPs those
days. That said, chances are still below climo, and confined to the
mountains until after 00z Fri. Max temps in the upper 90s for much of
the Piedmont Mon-Wed with lower 90s for mountain valleys. Very deep
mixing is expected which should tap into drier air aloft and help
dewpoints mix out a few degrees each afternoon.

Despite the fact that daily records are not currently forecast to be
tied/broken (see climate section below), potential for a
climatologically unusual heat wave does exist per the ECMWF Extreme
Forecast Index rising above 0.95 for MaxT in some of our CWA Tue and
Wed, coincident with SoT > 1. That doesn`t take into account heat
index, which is expected to top out near 105 in a few spots in the
Piedmont Tue-Thu. Min temps probably will be very high--again not
quite reaching high-min records, but contributing to a multi-day heat
event. The warm mins help the NWS HeatRisk product reach the Major
category over most areas along/south of I-85 Mon-Thu, and Extreme in
some of the Charlotte metro Tue-Thu. Current forecast values suggest
Heat Advisory eventually will be needed for parts of the area, but
given the duration some consideration may be given to an Extreme Heat
Watch if confidence continues to grow in impacts.

I absolutely dread, detest, loathe, and abhor weather like this.

Nice picture of one of the Orbs! I always thought they were responsible for Rainbows!

Gonna blame the orbs for all the mechanical problems. Last weekend, I had to change the ball joints on the van(fun) then on the way home my car's fuel pump crapped out. Last night our washing machine drain pump died and today my 12v trickle charger bit the dust!

Thankfully, I got the fuel tank off the car and the $200 dollar part will arrive next week and the washer pump will be in monday.

I haven’t been posting a lot this spring. Truth is, we’ve been busy. We moved a 135 year old family farmhouse today to save it from demolition. Proud family moment. They even let my dad pull her accross the farm where she’ll be safe for a few more generations. IMG_3788.jpegIMG_3783.jpeg

I know the boys can appreciate this

I'd love year round DST, or to be more precise, i'd love to stay at GMT-5 year round. People's preferences probably most strongly correlate to whether they live on the west or east side of their timezone, with those on the eastern edges more likely to prefer DST and those on the western edges more likely to prefer non-DST.

In Huntsville being on GMT-5 in the winter would mean the sun would still be up when the 9-5 workforce gets off work.

I love it. Low 20's this morning with this scenery. Work hasn't cancelled though. 💀 Still leaning towards no there.

I still can't believe this actually happened. January was a big makeup for Hurricane Helene, which if I was fully awake, would've been the scariest storm I've ever been in.

I don’t think people sleep in Japan. I just happened to be looking at a live cam in Tokyo at 2:17 am and the streets are full of people.
