“For each of the last 10 years, what did CFSv2/NMME/ECMWF predict in August for the coming DJF, what actually happened, and how accurate was each forecast?”

2021-22: Again, the Southeast signal was quite good. The actual winter was above normal across much of the Lower 48, with Georgia and South Carolina having their 7th-warmest winter on record.


2022-23: The models correctly anticipated the broad warm East/Southeast background despite La Niña. Actual winter temperatures were above normal from the southern Plains through the East Coast; several eastern states had their second-warmest or top-10 warmest winter. ECMWF’s own review says its forecast did predict the warm U.S. signal, although it overdid the north-south temperature gradient.


2023-24: This was another relatively easy case because of the strong El Niño/global warmth. The actual DJF was the warmest winter on record for the Lower 48.

I agree on not believing hype. This winter I'll do what I always do and start model tracking two weeks out, at a time, starting in late November.

Of course, there are other indicators that I think are important like northern hemisphere snow cover and the current status of enso. And going back to the developing Atlantic la nina, this is the first time in the last couple of decades; at least pared with a Pacific el nino. It is supposed to promote blocking episodes.

Yep- I went back 11 years, and of course, 2015-2016 was the last year forecasted to have BN temps in the SE (forecast in August) and it did not verify. Was warmer than expected. Somone like Larry can fact check this. A bit sobering, maybe the models are only good at predicting warm... who knows? It's a new winter season and a new el nino. Weather is going to weather, should be fun to watch develop.

Who knows whether or not the seasonal models are right? What we do now know is that, for the past decade, in August they predicted an above-normal SE US, and as 256WX proved, they were right. Based on that, I sure do prefer a cold rather than warm outlook.

The seasonal models, to my limited understanding, are largely driven by ocean SST current and predicted anomalies. The commonality, other than a screaming El Niño-driven southern jet, is a raging Greenland block and -NAO displacing colder air into the Continental US. I would think the warm anomaly over the NW Pacific would enhance the northern branch, leading to a split-flow with the northern branch forced meridionally by the aforementioned Greenland/Maritime Canada blocking that has been a constant feature on the seasonals.

The unprecedented very cold SE US CFSv2 progs for Feb continue! For example, last 10 days/40 runs of CFSv2 runs average out to ~8F BN for their Feb ‘27 prog at ATL or ~40.3F! That would be its coldest month since the very cold Jan of 2014. Are y’all ready? :) ;)

Are we headed for perhaps one of the worst seasonal prog busts of all time, a truly Fab Feb, or something in between? This is fun to dream about:

It's been mentioned, but my biggest side-eye to the model is the cold in Alaska. If there's a trough there or south in the bay, the conus is going to want to ridge. I feel like the model is just generally overhyping a nino -nao and Atlantic blocking for its cold output in the SE, along with wet precip.

Yeah it is like I've said before... We had pretty much the warmest winter ever here last year and yet the one weekend had a 2 day snowstorm to get us to average

There's been some real clunkers and colder winters not do that

I never would have predicted that last August for sure
 
Looked at some analogs a little more its really a wide variety for this local area nearly 0 snow to 10+ Obviously a stronger nino is going to have implications which imo may mean a lean to the warmer side versus a weaker nino. What we cannot do is fumble the likely mjo progression into the cold phases from mid January on like we did in the last nino. I do think this year may be one of the first in a while where we aren't moving into spring in late Feb like we have in so many recent years. Have to say though at some point in December I bet there is going to be a ton of winter canceling when we hit a run of 70s due to a stout SER and the stj pumping wave after wave to the west and north

I'll never bite on a strong el nino winter until it proves me wrong at verification. I'll be an optimistic winter wx LR hunter like always.

But I break out into cold sweats when I hear mod-strong el nino. Got burnt by last couple and I want get burnt by this one. Hope Im eating crow by time March madness rolls around. Until then my expectation meter is on zero.

Yep seems that was unless we get some type of canada/nao quasi block that can pin most of the severe south of i20 which isn't impossible. I think late March and most of April could really like pile on the severe weather

It's nice to see the above graph of strong el nino years and snow output. But yeah, 1991-92 really affected me on not liking strong el ninos. Hopefully this year ends up a "normal" event.
Yea, I believe 1991-92 was a complete shutout on measurable winter precip for most in the Carolinas outside of the mountains.

93 was the only good year in the early 90's around here--the rest were dreadful.

@GaWx can probably correct me but I remember a good wet snow in, I think, January of 1992. It was beautiful and probably 4-6". It may have been a ULL because in the afternoon the sun came out and it didn't stick around long.

That’s the one in Jan ‘92 that gave ATL, especially airport S, a big snow with 8” at my friend’s in Henry County! Airport got 5”. Where I was (N Springs/Dunwoody) though, it wasn’t nearly as heavy (~2.5”), it didn’t stick to roads, and it melted rapidly due to marginal temps/ground temps. @EmersonGA

That had to have been an interesting setup to do that in ATL but practically miss the mtns.

Just on NC alone. I can probably find a few historical snow maps where Wilmington was the jackpot, but I’d bet 95% of those were 6’’+, and not…um, 3.8’’. LOL

I’m expecting a December similar to 2015. Very mild in the southeast with potential for severe weather and widespread above average rainfall. The one thing that gives me pause is that unlike then, we’ve seemed to be in a period lately where strong blocking and -NAO set up more often during the winter.

I'm looking forward to the sleet piling up. Looks to be a good time in Feb. With Atl in the Super Bowl and all the sleet :)

Had a good snow in Charleston in 2010 and they have had 2 good ones since then that I can remember. Plus you get Hurricane season to look forward too

Might genuinely be another 10 years before that area and honestly up to where I am (and further north too frankly) gets good snow chances, 24/25 - 25/26 was the first time Charleston had back-to-back measurable snowfall since the 80's, though a lot of their area might have busted on the WSW for 1/31/26 and projections the NWS gave because ULLs can be little stinkers.

In a way, I think I got lucky too because I was just far enough to the west to catch some of the good stuff band wise, 10-20 miles to my east, there was some totals under 2" while I probably had 3-4" (airport to my north officially recorded 3.5" and areas just to my west were around 4").

Yeah, I'm a non-believer in an 09/10 analogue, even though I'd take it.
 
We need to save all of Snowbird Bob’s maps in an archive this year. I wanna see how far south he can go. This one is trying to put Tampa and Orlando in the game. ☃️🤣
