I do think this war was a mistake if the regime stays alive at the end of it. That appears increasingly unlikely as the US and Israel’s hopes that the regime would collapse into civil war after the bombs started falling looks increasingly foolhardy. But I don’t think regime change can be accomplished without 100k+ boots on the ground at this point, which isn’t going to happen.

I mean Iraq for as much as it may have not been worth the cost did achieve regime change in the end. I think it’s fair to say the country is in a better place than it was under Sadaam. Was it worth 15 years of occupation and thousands of American lives? Probably not.

I think the Trump admin misread badly how this was gonna go. Trump is desperate to avoid $4-6 gas, sinking stock market etc the summer leading into the mid terms so he has to find a way to paint the current mess a "win". Iran knows this and will use it to get all the concessions it can. In the end it will largely be all for nothing, the time to strike was several months ago when millions of Iranians were in the streets desperate for support to help overthrow the regime.

I agree but for a different reason. I believe he bought the bait on a people whose desire for a revolution was overstated. If what Larry's source said is correct, if the accident of a bombed school sours opinion that quickly, that opinion wasn't strong from the get go.

I think we need to look back at why Obama didn't inflame the situation there several years ago and remove some of the flak he took. He may have read the room correctly after all.

Obama's foreign policy wasn't great, but I'm thinking that he dropped the ball more on something else that has been a game changer for a decade.

What my friend said was that much fewer than the prior 80% still support the war. When it was 80%, it was almost all who hate the mullahs regime. The new number could still be 50% or whatever as he didn’t give me an estimated %. So, to clarify, he didn’t say anything like few now support it.
