Misc General Banter Thread

NY folks are complaining anyway and I saw through poking around that they haven't gotten to Staten Island/etc in cleaning up the roads, which matters as many of their teachers likely have to travel.

Yeah Long Island and places where totals are near or exceeding 30" will probably close schools tomorrow but I'd imagine in the New York City boroughs, they will be able to open schools tomorrow because of constant plowing and clearing roads...a lot more investment goes into making sure the country's largest city gets back to operating as quickly as possible.

Areas in and around Charlotte got over a foot of snow nearly a month ago. How long were schools closed there? It's really just about clearing the roads....snow is harmless outside of driving(especially after the weather has cleared).
Idk about Charlotte but kannapolis city schools were closed about a week after, and a 2H delay the Monday following

Just insane. Friend sent me pics from his place up in Providence, RI today.

View attachment 194512I’m trying to decide if I’m jealous still. That’s…. A lot of snow. 33” I think he said?

I was going to say that at some point it becomes an incredible burden to have to shovel all of that out of the way, especially if one isn’t young. I don’t think I’d want to deal with that. Or to have to depend on someone else to do it for you doesn’t sound much better. At least in the south things shut down and we can wait for Mother Nature to melt it away. I could never see myself living up north.

Exactly. I was jealous last night. But after seeing one his videos that included this part..

Yeah. I’m out!

Yeah, I think I can't do what Rhode Island just did. I need to move and have said so many times, but the upper south at the most would probably fit me best, and really, I've said that part of the reason why I need to move is not really even snow related.

Augusta is close enough for a daytrip to the beach or to zoos hypothetically (as one of my last zoo trips as a young kiddo was in Columbia), but I really don't think it's close enough for daytrips to even the southern mountains.

Like I think the northern upstate is 3 hours and some of the NC towns that made an impression on me are 3 and a half, and that's just a tad too far.

Yup the other problem I noticed was we only had 8 inches here last month and nobody touched the neighborhoods or the side streets or most of the parking lots

So for an entire week at least it was a mess still even though the main roads were clear

School was closed for 4 days because of it

This is a recurring storyline here whenever we stay cold after even with just a few inches and I can imagine it happens up there too on probably an even worse scale

There were numerous stories about the piles in NYC from the last storm also

I know sometimes I get annoyed here that some of our winters aren't snowier but there's a fine line just north and northeast of here where when it snows so much it's not a big deal and you're expected to go to work still. I don't want to live in a place like that. I've always lived in a place where snow was special and it loses that at some point

My friend in Wichita who drives a school bus even told me they only missed one day there! Literally 3 hours away

From a weather standpoint, the mountains of NW NC/NE TN seems like a perfect (and not excessively cold/snowy) place to live, and I have interest in moving there someday.

Plenty of snow, and mild summers compared to much of the east coast - without being bitterly cold. I'd like to experience an insane snow total of multiple feet just once, but I bet 30"+ would be too much for most on this board (probably even myself!) That's at least a decade's worth for most of us here. It's hard to imagine me ever reaching my snow limit, but I haven't really seen more than 10" since I've been old enough to remember it...

And NYC schools are open for a regular day haha. Gotta love living up northScreenshot_20260224-073433.Chrome.png

Bro this has got to be a banner year for you. Congrats.
Thanks! Compared to the last 5-6 years, then yes. In history of Blacksburg, no. We are still slightly below average on the season which is wild.

Rather strong signal for a toaster ridge in early March towards the End of WK1-WK2, with possible mid/upper 80s as a ceiling. Rather legit look here at a shot at some persistent late spring like warmth and even early summer if you start drawing anomalous 850s out the south central U.S. View attachment 194519View attachment 194520View attachment 194521View attachment 194522View attachment 194523View attachment 194524
Thank goodness, this is when I will be in Florida for spring break. 80s here we come!

Dang that's crazy to think about. We've had our average from one storm despite the warmest winter on record haha and the storm being half what some of the models said

And the pattern favoring east of here the entire winter otherwise

11 years ago today we had the start of our winter storm in Raleigh! Ended up with 6.5 inches!! Was the most I had ever seen till the December 2018 storm of 8”

such a fun storm. we were right on the line at my buddy's place just south of the beltline (u-suites for inquiring minds). it would flip from rain to the heaviest snow you've seen in your life every 30 minutes. there was thundersnow right around the time my friend decided to jump in the pool. got it on video. my reaction is out there on some snapchat memory or icloud server somewhere. it ended up busting a little low with the mixing but 10/10 for entertainment value

I’m giving this winter an A- for my backyard. Two winter storm warnings that both verified. That’s very rare here. Once a decade at best type stuff. Also had the first warning criteria ice accretions here since 2005.
Then we had the 4 inch dry powder snow which is the first multi-inch all powder snow since February 2010.
I also got to experience a snow squall with easily the heaviest rates I’ve ever seen, (even though it only lasted 2-3 minutes).

Another unique thing was “snow on snow” with sleet still on the ground when we got our second storm. That’s only happened a couple times in the past 35 years here.

December and January both below normal on temps and January featured plenty of threats and almost every day had trackable potential events.

February has been bad, but that’s the only thing keeping this from an A+ winter.

Agree with this 100% and ready for Spring!

The only thing that keeps me from giving this winter an A+ is the fact that I was outside in shorts and flip flops on Christmas Day. Can’t go lower than an A in a winter that gave me over 13.2” of snow IMBY including the earliest I have ever seen measurable snow with the 0.2” I got 11/10. Then the back to weekends to end January will be one of the favorite weeks of winter weather I’ve ever seen…. 1.3” of sleet/snow and 0.2” of ice accretion on 1/25 with temps in the upper teens and lower 20s including that line of convective sleet that came through that evening was fun to experience. Then 1/31 will be put up there with January 1988 for those of in the CLT metro. Over 18 hours straight of snowfall with temps in the upper teens, 11.7” of pure powder IMBY.

I ended up in my first "northern" blizzard yesterday! We had almost 15 hours of snow blowing and falling and the wind over 20mph for 24 hours! It was insane! I had snow drifts up to my waist on my driveway and the pushed up snow in the neighborhood and towns is awesome!

It was a good one (in the Triad for me), we didn't see a single sleet pellet or mix at all where I was, which was a welcome change. I will always remember it, too, because I am pretty sure we were in the mid or maybe even upper 50s with full sunshine that day and by 10pm it was pouring heavy snow with a temp of 32-33 degrees. Quite a change!

Remembering it kind of hurts as that is the last time I saw 6"+ of snow. :(

He was in Florida temporarily after college, I think he just came back shortly after that winter season iirc?

It's sort of like how I can count 2/25/15 and GA's White Christmas, but I was somewhere else in those two cases. Sadly don't have much memories anymore of 2/25/15, but when I visualize, I'm like, sheesh, I am WAY too much of a loner. I can remember dropping down to the woods on a trail by myself and throwing snowballs...at a tree.

Nope, I was in Florida from 2016-2019 before they became the snowshine state. I actually did get a dusting of snow in Tallahassee in 2018, though, which was there first accumulating snowfall (all of 0.1”, LOL) in 23 years at the time! Of course, they got a lot more (mostly IP) last winter.

It hurts me when I look at the various major snowstorms I missed while I lived in Florida. Now I’ve been back for over six years and we haven’t approached them. Oh well. Finally sort of hit one this year, but 4” doesn’t feel like winning so much when you’ve got double digit snowfall totals making basically a complete circle around you. Beggars can’t be choosers, though.
