Wintry Jan 23-27 Winter Storm Obs

I think it happened with the President's Day 2003 storm, as well (I believe that was all-sleet in GSO?). I remember there was an area next to our garage such that the sleet came off the roof in multiple directions and fell into there and we had a four-foot pile (or so) of sleet after it, LOL!
We had one like that in 85, where we ended up with 6 inches of sleet. The piles around the house were incredible.

Picked up and now it’s a mix of giant sleet (almost small hail) and freezing rain. Odd that we just started getting freezing rain.

Sleet is picking up with a radar return that looks like summer

Just scraped about .2 off my car. All the ice in the trees is melting at a good clip, even at 33.

This I think explains the primary sleet we are seeing currently look at the difference between the HRRR sounding at 7pm and the current obs out of RDU same time

Seems we are winding down here. Overall, a decent mixed storm, although I'd be lying if this was nearly as impactful as it was hyped up to be / I thought it would be a few days ago, so it's a letdown in that way. On the other hand, it's still quite high-impact for travel and I'd rather avoid a damaging ice storm with widespread power outages, anyways. We did get some ice accrual, but it must be under a tenth of an inch. As far as sleet, it's hard to tell. I'd guess it's over an inch but less than 2". I guess I should try measuring, but it's tougher to measure than snow. We had a sleet storm as big as this in 2022, but I suppose this was much higher impact with how cold it is.

I took a Jeb Walk as it was winding down, but it definitely wasn't as heavy as it was during the heart of the band. I did see a possum, though!

I took a nice Jeb walk earlier today with the kids. Mercy, what we pick up over the years.

Glad there were no significant power outages in the area. The cold temperatures that will follow would’ve been a borderline humanitarian crisis if the ice came to pass. Fortunately, the CAD won. Gotta wait for a plow to plow my street (probably tonight), dig out tomorrow, then drive back Tuesday. Perks of being north of Richmond.

This will be a fascinating storm to study. Every sounding looked like ZR but the near-surface air was so cold, it forced that precip to be sleet
