Misc General Banter Thread

Can’t lie, I was about to pack it in for the night after the Chicken Little “the sky is falling crowd” had a meltdown over 2 trash models. Thankfully our beloved king came in with an absolute nuke to end us off on a high note.

3” of ice? Maybe you mean sleet?

3” of ice is something that causes giant transmission line structures to crumple. Like Canada back in the late 90s.
If that verified it would be one of, if not the biggest natural disaster in Georgia history.

Yeah. This isn’t fun anymore. This isn’t trees snapping and the unfortunate neighbor or three. This is infrastructure damage that would cripple for many many weeks. Terrifying. Good thing the Euro overdoes the ZR thing, right 😬🤞🏻?

Going to be shut down for days. Southside is going to be really devastated by freezing rain if the euro is right. Really dangerous stuff being advertised right now.

Not just Atlanta. The whole upper half of MS, AL, GA and SC shut down completely. The amount of pines that will come down will cause problems for months.

I don't know that we can grasp this and our soil is still soaked from all the rain!

I'm going to fire up my Katina generator tomorrow just in case. I ran it for the first time in 20 years before Helene. I was amazed it fired right up.
What?! 20!? Did you even fuel stabilizer it?

It gives me hope if you didn’t. Mine has been neglected for 2 years. Oops. Been busy. I was so scared it won’t, so I just got a new one (dual fuel and with inverter. Cuz I need clean power).

But the old one is a Honda, and it’ll at least run a space heater to keep the macaws warm. (Two tropical chickens in an ice storm nightmare here).

Hopefully this tells me I’ll just have two generators now.

Got a 3 year old kid and a 15 year old German shepherd, being on the verge of an historic winter storm that may leave us without power for days-weeks has my wife on edge a little bit

Won’t make any decision before it’s go time but thinking should I head north into a ton of snow and hope they don’t get iced and keep power? At least that way kiddo has a memorable snow vacation or just head south for them to ride it out a bit

At the risk of too many cross-current threads, we're creating this thread as a place to be a catchall for general banter and discussion.

A good example of something that might go here would be:

"Hey, where is that Phil and that Larry guy that used to post here?"

"I don't know."

"I really miss them."

"Oh yeah, they post over at American."

"What's American"?

"Hotdogs and baseball are American."

"No, where Phil and Larry post."

"Oh yeah, that's another website that used to have a lot of posters."

"Oh, ok. Do Phil and Larry like hotdogs?"

"I don't know. What do you like on your hotdogs"?

"Mustard and relish. You"?

"Mustard, chili, and slaw."

"Man, we're really connecting!"

"Yeah, thank goodness for the Banter thread."

Something like that. The Complaining thread was originally designed to be for complaining about the weather or the fact that @Tarheel1 was going to get all the snow after it was modeled for the Southeast. Let's try to use it for that purpose and this for all the other stuff.

Let me know if you have questions, and I'll help you out.
Who’s on first?

Depends. Keep in mind that if we reach the icepocalypse level, you might have a hell of a time getting back home.

Think hurricanes. How many times have you seen folks denied entry to get back to their homes? I’m not saying that’s what would happen. I’m just saying ya should consider the worst case scenarios.

But I’d choose my family over property. And make sure that good boy/girl (German Sheppard) is kept warm and loved no matter what!

I'm really hoping something changes with this one. I mean even Just snow If totals are half what's being shown would be bad news around here. But if the other is there too, People don't realize just how much Gas you have to have for Generator/Gas logs and Food you would need to get you through possibly a week Power outage. This is different than Helene cause with that one you didn't have to worry about staying warm. Once you out of Gas then can't get nowhere, then there you are

I mentioned that we’re in Grenada this week and returning home this weekend. (Splendid timing.)

We changed our Saturday flight into CLT from originally arriving at 11:59 PM to now arriving at 7:15 PM. We have to drive up I-85, but—depending on storm timing—it could very well be a mess by early evening. We have no groceries and we have to pick up our dog on the way home. Decisions, decisions.

I’m wondering if we should cut our trip short a day and try to get a flight on Friday.

“Honey, I’ve been checking the weather and I have some bad news.”

Knowing the drive very well, you're looking at 1"-5" on the ground based on the 00z Euro and GFS at 7pm when you land in Charlotte. That would be a very slow drive and maybe dicey with the wrong vehicle, It took me 2+ hours from Lexington back home last winter in an inch of snow that should have been less than 30 minutes.
Based on experience, these snows usually come quicker rather than later.
If you have a 4runner or jeep, go ahead.
Otherwise I would adjust accordingly based on current models.
Of course your mileage may vary.

Feel free to message me if you need help.

Decent choice!

Do know that open frames are louder (if that matters to you), and depending on needs, ya may (or not) need an inverter to clean up the output.

Space heater (appropriate gauge cord y’all!), an appliance, charging devices don’t worry.

TV and network gear, maybe more of an issue? Inverter types are what ya need for that.

I cannot stress enough that generators are not exactly walk into store and buy sort of things. Many are delivery only. Time to consider could be right now.

Wattage is the most important thing. Plug in those numbers. Space heaters gobble up a ton. More than you think.

I know I’ve said this many times, but hey, it’s important! We’re all concerned about the potentially deadly dihydrogen monoxide in its most beautiful state. But carbon monoxide is a serious thing too.

Don’t be dumb. Get a detector (cheap and worth the lives of you, your fam, and pets). Don’t put your generator in an attached garage. Most require a stupid overpriced, little tent (they aren’t weather proof out of the box - irritating, I know). But you can save money building a simple shelter for it.

Keep it well away from doors or windows. Exhaust away from house.

Hey twister. You might want to trade in those golf clubs for chainsaws this weekend. Never can be to prepared for cad. You know what im saying.
Going to pick up some spare chains, gas and mix tomorrow morning. I will likely need them to get out of the driveway. This is looking to be a mess. It's time to prep all around. No more guessing.

No doubt. Yes sir. No playing around here. We better use our time wisely before go time and prepare and prepare some more because once it starts there's no telling when we will be able to get back out again. Best of luck to all and prepare now and be safe.

I know most of the public in the south doesn't understand that when you get 6+ inches of snow with close to a whole week below freezing that you won't be going anywhere unless you are really special- but nothing will still be open. This will be entertaining at the least.

Yeah seriously the people on Facebook who think this will be no big deal are funny to me. They have no idea
