Misc General Banter Thread

At some point an honest conversation needs to be had around here regarding who has actually lived through a high impact winter storm.
You actually raise a pretty good point here, and this made me think about my past experiences.

Joined the board with Dec 2018 which was a whiff for me. Before that nothing sig. Nothing since either. Never personally experienced a 6"+ storm at my house

Ice Storm of 82 in Bham
Blizzard of 93 in Bham
Ice Storm 2014 in Augusta, GA (no power for 5 days)
And then the sleet/ice storm in Jan 2025 that wouldn't melt for 5 full days. I hate ice. I would rather have 35 degree rain than ice that won't melt.

Gosh that Dec 18 cutoff was BRUTAL. I mean what, 20, 25 min drive to your place from mine? About 2" of slop here that ended as rain

I'm trying to remember if I've even seen a signal like this here

Maybe 2021 in Texas... 👀

Okay, let’s try it again. Cabin in the smokies saved but waiting to see if this is a hometown storm first. Fully ready to congratulate the gulf coast but the ensemble support is nothing like we’ve seen yet! 🤞

Kinda reminds me of the way the Rufus has been looking at times and it's worrisome especially as you go to the east.

Needless to say, the models that showed the rain/snow line stalling around Richmond County for much of the event verified. I initially thought that I might go jump on I-20 and stop in Thomson, but I changed my mind and headed towards Wrens instead and that worked probably about as well. Not too sure about totals as I left with it still coming down, but I honestly think they had picked up 0.25" while I was in the area (slow going since I don't have a clue where things are, I decided I needed to find a place for the facilities before I left).

Edit: If I were to change anything, I would've not taken country roads. The rain alone made it a not fun drive, now imagine if it was below freezing.

I used to say get the storm to day 7 before getting too excited. For me (now) I say let's get this under day 5, with model agreement.

One thing I didn't expect from the 2017 event in Cobb was the power outages. Many were without power for days to weeks! Not from ice, but from the heavy snow!

I lived in Acworth that year and I remember seeing the green flashes throughout the night from transformers blowing.

The areas above 1000’ that hit right at 32 really scored that day, but the snow was so extremely wet that trees and power lines couldn’t handle it.

Makes me think of December 2010. 4-6" with a little ice to begin with. The ice insulated the snow from the ground and it froze into rock hard tracks along roads that didn't get plowed. Technically a "white" Christmas since it began on the 25th. The next week was the coldest I ever remember being in my adult life.

2014 was a mess too. 2 storms within 10 days of each other both with significant ice accretion and snow.
