Misc General Banter Thread

Just knowing how models handle CAD, we need to pray for deeper cold to get sleet.
The good news is that I think the models tend to overdo the ZR and underdo the IP in such setups. I’d personally expect more sleet compared to freezing rain than the verbatim maps show. Plus, of course, 1” ZR liquid doesn’t translate to 1” of accrual.

This coming weekend has a small chance of me checking off a bucket list item. Minimum 3 inches of snow followed by at least 2 inches of sleet, and the Chief's kiss, at least an inch of ice accrual.

No power, don't care. Roof damage, heck, I could use a new one anyway. Bring it!

At some point an honest conversation needs to be had around here regarding who has actually lived through a high impact winter storm.

✋2002 ice storm. 2-3 inches of snow and over a solid inch of ice on top from freezing rain. I remember it pouring rain at 19 degrees. Green light explosions of transformers blowing during the night. No power for a week. My wife freaks out any time there's a possibility of an ice storm. I hope that was a once in a lifetime event.

I have never feared more for my safety during any event like December 2002

Not as bad as January 2000/December 2002. Lights were out for a week. CP&L was too sluggish with the repairs.
As someone in the industry, I can promise they weren’t too sluggish with repairs. When you get a storm that affects an entire region, your basin of help gets really narrow and thin because every utility is in the same boat you are. In good conditions, it takes a crew hours to replace and rewire a pole - even longer if it’s a three phase setup. Multiply that by hundreds, if not thousands during major storm events and that’s why it takes a long time. Also those guys can’t be rushed. One false move and you don’t come home.

Was only 12 years old with a large pine tree next to my bedroom. Heard limbs hitting the house all through the night and the lights went out around 2 or 3 am. Didn’t come back on for a week. I remember listening to a portable radio with my parents the next morning and the folks on WBT saying the power outages throughout the metro area were substantially higher than Hugo.

Ive been through 3. Week plus no power all 3.

1993 Blizzard mtns. 6 days in dark

2000 crusher . 13 inches on light ice accrual from 2 days before. 7 days in dark

But #3 was the worst, December 2002 over an inch of frzng rain with surface temp stuck on 22 . Wiped out power to 100% of county and the timber was obliterated. 8.5 days in dark

The discourse over this potential storm on X/twitter will be glorious for the next 5 days or so. "I'm not buying a southern solution" "Euro overdoes cold blasts" "I'm not buying a southern solution" "GEFS has a much better handle on the pattern" etc. etc.

i really hope the people who are wishing for ice get it; so they can see how miserable things are and they will never wish for it again

Let's hope the joke isn’t on us for the threat at the end of the month. The models are really honking for a solid winter storm.
In all fairness don't we say this about every juicy pattern that's two to three weeks out, and the vast majority of them never amount to anything. At least we had a good chase with this past system

When's the last time we've seen all 3 major Models in so much agreement for a big dig winter storm this far out? I'm not sure I've ever seen it. I know I'm praying for colder snowier solution, DO NOT WANT ICE

The storm that shall not be named. 1993. And Hothlanta (2011). And some 80s ones, but I was young and don’t recall specifics.

Edit: think bad ice in 2000 too. But I lived in high density area of midtown and don’t really recall lights out for any substantial duration.

If anyone that pays for models wants to do me a solid and post the eps mean daily high and low with the bar graphs I would appreciate it. It'll be one to save that run is insane

Are temps a problem GA this time around or would it still ice/snow with what its showing currently?
I wouldn't worry to much about semantics 7 days out. It is still far enough out to be rain or sunny and 60. Just enjoy reading these guys breakdowns for a few days.
