Misc General Banter Thread

Never denied that the torches have ended up busting. Just saying no storms have came with the cold for most of us. Personally I’m not interested in just tracking the next cold shot. I used to be. But now If it’s not bringing a winter storm doesn’t really matter to me if it’s cold or not.
Cold weather without a storm is useless as tits on a bore hog…

Merry Christmas everybody! I've never met most of you face to face, but I consider you all friends. I hope you all have a wonderful day tomorrow and of course get snow this winter.
Agree 100%. Merry Christmas!

Here comes Barney, here comes Barney, right down Weenie Lane.
GFS and Euro and all of his models pulling on the vodka train. Winds are blowing, weenies singing, all is frigid and right. So, hang your thermometers and check the models, ‘cause Barney comes tonight.

Merry Christmas to all of you fellow weenies and to all a good night!

Merry Christmas weather friends. May you all have joy and peace this day; not because of gifts or decorations or food or snow, but because we are loved by others and by the Creator of our universe. The ultimate gift and love has been given to all of us, not because we deserve it but because we are loved and cherished. This day is a remembrance of a day that's value is immeasurable. Merry Christmas and may God bless each of you and your families!

You sure did, Frosty! That’s Barney no doubt! Yes, he’s being transported to us via the Crazy Uncle, but we can at least dream. Can you imagine if this were to somehow verify? @Drizzle Snizzle would be 6F colder than the 17 he got earlier this month!

I hadn’t looked at any of the models until tonight. Looks like GFS and EURO lost Barney somewhere during the transport Southeast, lol

From one Tennesseean to another I gotta say I agree

Yeah everyone here wants Arctic air. I mean don't get me wrong I hope we get a snowstorm this year eventually at like 30 degrees but like everytime we get flooded with Arctic air it barely snows and it's so cold and windy with a negative wind chill you don't want to be outside and then everyone complains it didn't snow like it used to

No thank you haha

I gotta say there is something pretty cool about patterns like January 2014 where we get absolutely nuked with clippers , but seems like patterns like that don’t usually occur for that long of a time.

Vibes haven’t been better this winter.

We’re certainly setting ourselves up very nicely in the long run by nuking the Aleutian ridge with a +EAMT event.

The -NAO should stick around for a while as well with the circulation anomalies from November & early December’s stratospheric warming event propagating deep into the troposphere.

Also, the subtropical jet is alive & kicking.

The ChatGPT explanation/translation of this one is really great. Highly suggest reading it

Some quotes:

🌍 What is EAMT?

EAMT = East Asian Mountain Torque

This is a measure of how atmospheric winds interact with major mountain ranges (Himalayas, Tibetan Plateau, etc.)
  • When winds hit mountains, they transfer momentum into the atmosphere.
  • That momentum then propagates downstream through the jet stream.
Think of it like:
A shove given to the atmosphere over Asia that later shows up over the Pacific and North America.

➕ What does a +EAMT event do?
A positive EAMT event typically:
  • disrupts the Pacific jet,
  • breaks down stubborn ridges (like the Aleutian ridge),
  • promotes pattern reorganization across the hemisphere.
So when they say:

“Nuking the Aleutian ridge”

They mean:
  • The ridge is being weakened, flattened, or displaced
  • The Pacific jet is becoming more dynamic and flexible
  • This allows better downstream pattern evolution
Why that’s good:

You want ridges and troughs to move and evolve, not get stuck.

What is a stratospheric warming (SSW)?

A Sudden Stratospheric Warming happens when:
  • the polar stratosphere rapidly warms,
  • the polar vortex weakens or deforms,
  • high-latitude blocking becomes more likely afterward
This doesn’t affect the surface immediately.

⬇️ “Propagating deep into the troposphere”

This means:
  • The disruption started high in the atmosphere
  • It is now working its way downward
  • Eventually influencing:
    • jet stream position,
    • blocking patterns,
    • surface weather.
This downward influence can last weeks, sometimes over a month.

Key idea:

Stratospheric events don’t flip patterns overnight — they bias them for an extended period.

So they’re saying:
  • The -NAO is being reinforced from above
  • It’s not just a model blip
  • It has structural support

Merry Christmas.

I started a new social media page.

I’d appreciate any support and follows

Heck yea - I’m glad to hear this. That chat GPT breakdown is a game changer. My meteorology career stopped at physics 1 and skew t diagrams.

Yeah at this point I have a running chat with it where I plug in every comment full of Jargon or describing some process or phenomenon I don’t understand. Been really great to learn from, wonderful use of AI

Ensemble or single run?

They’re single 0Z op runs except Euro is yesterday’s 12Z) including the one with Barney making it to the SE, the Crazy Uncle (CMC). The 12Z Crazy Uncle has it once again though to a slightly less intense extent:

Question for those of you who have been doing this for a while — what’s the shortest timeframe/lead time that a winter storm has appeared on the models and ended up verifying?

I mean going from basically nothing, nada for that date on any models (except maybe a fantasy ensemble member here and there or fantasy storm in the LR if you were to look far enough back), to suddenly a winter storm on the horizon and it actually happens?

For those of us who grew up in snowy climos, it's a lot more common than you would think.
