Just had rain/snow mix in Bburg
 
Started snowing at a decent clip here in Highlands, NC. I’m at 4k ft. Winds are making a lot of noise outside. The snow was not really supposed to be much. Radar not showing much. I’m at the base of Shortoff Mountain that goes up to 5k ft and the winds coming down off the mountain are impressive. Glad I’m not stuck up on top!
 
I just looked at the Christmas Day forecast on the GFS and shorts and t-shirts would be a good wardrobe choice if it is to be believed with highs in the mid seventies at RDU. The day after Christmas you can break the jackets back out with highs in the mid forties. That must be a strong cold front coming through on Christmas night.

I'm gonna just enjoy the next 5 -6 days. I can honestly report and say that the ops, ensembles, 0Z CFS look as bad as I've seen. Good news is Christmas and beyond are still 14 days + away and things will change no doubt. But it's death ridge city. We'd cook to death if it was middle of summer instead of the shortest days of the year. several ensemble suite has RDU at 70 degrees Christmas day as of right now.

Scandinavian blocking usually teleconnects to a SE ridge so this makes sense actually.

The way out of this one is to get the Scandinavian ridge to retrograde over to the Baffin Bay & become a west-based -NAO to force the West coast trough underneath it. Got a ways to go from there

I think we're going warm for at least the last half of the month. All the long range operational models along with the specific indices, scream warmth.


PNA - Solidly negative the next two weeks
AO - Solidly positive the next 10 days, and then maybe goes towards neutral.
NAO - Slightly positive the next two weeks
