The weekend after Thanksgiving, into that first few days of the next workweek, has my attention! It’ll somehow find a way to rain, but fun to track anyway View attachment 177051View attachment 177052
A blue norther’ coming through!
Going full international here, specifically the Netherlands. They have an event called the elfstedentocht which is an absolutely legendary, 200km skating race (maybe the most significant sporting event in the world) that hasn't taken place since 1997 due to insufficient cold. It needs to be cold and dry to allow for 15cm of ice. Usually 14 days of frost is needed. Usually the best setup is when rossby wave breaking occurs in mid Europe, creating a high over scandinavia and allowing for the "russian bear" setup. The positively tilted trough it creates is very important, because heavy snowfall would really stunt ice growth. Anyways, the "elfstedenkoorts" or elfstedenfever is kicking into high gear now in the Netherlands as the chances of a race seem to be growing (slightly).mostly unrelated, but do you know what's up with the crazy way out of the realm of possibility splotches of snow the AIFS-ens produces? seen it over the atlantic in like october lolI guess I’m gonna ride with the GEFS and AIFS til the wheels fall off (which I’m sure they will eventually).
