Misc General Banter Thread

I think a large portion of the population inside our border are not Americans, and many others that are American have been taught to hate everything about this country. I think the beginning of the downfall was around 2012, maybe earlier. I certainly hope things can get better, but I’m a skeptic.

A lot of it comes from social media that's where people get the idea that 9/11 or the weather is fake or the clouds in the sky mean they are poisoning us or they can steer a hurricane into a swing state to impact the election

Just some of the things I've heard since last year

On a little lighter side, stayed in a fun hotel room over the weekend! Giant shower, with a giant fish tank, that lets you see into the room and the jacuzzi tub on the other side of the fish tank! 5 stars, highly recommend! View attachment 174871
That's wild. I bet you stood in front of that tank nekkid, didn't you?

I still stand by my statement that in ten or fifteen years we will see a Time magazine cover saying Social Media is the worst invention of our generation.

Do any of you Raleigh/Greensboro guys know any underground contractors out that way? I’ve got a directional bore in Greensboro at a gas station pulling back a piece of 1” pipe that pays $3k. I just can’t get up there to do it. Too much going on. 3 hour drive each way. It’s a long shot I know but maybe you guys have some connections

Charlie Kirk murderer, 22 yo Tyler Robinson of Utah, confessed he did it and then he was turned in by his father, who’s in the county Sheriff’s Dept:

Per Utah Governor Cox:

-a family member reported that Robinson had become "more political" in recent years, and said he "didn't like" Kirk
-Bullet casings were found with inscriptions, Cox says - one on an unfired casing said: "Hey fascist! Catch!"

Damn. Now y’all killed Charlie Kirk. Idk where it ends ya’ll but something is very wrong. We’ve regressed back to the 60’s as a society

It’s not one sided, though. This is an issue that seems like it’s getting worse over the last decade and it’s not good. There was the Congressional Baseball Game shooting, Gabby Gifford’s getting shot, Pelosi’s husband getting bludgeoned, the kidnapping plot of Gretchen Whitmer, the arson / attempted assasination of Shapiro, the murder of those Minnesota politicians a few months, etc….and depending on how you view it, January 6th itself. And of course Trump himself getting shot last summer. Political violence is not the answer and these are concerning times.

Oh, and there was Luigi’s murder of the health insurance CEO, too (regardless of whether the CEO was a good person, murder is extremely wrong and it was very concerning to me how many people acted like Luigi did a good thing by murdering that man, SMH).

Polite society can’t exist alongside heightened political violence.

I just made this mistake. It is absolutely horrifying. He has young kids and a wife this video should be scrubbed from the internet but of course it never will be. I detest social media for this very reason - I can not imagine being his family and ever seeing that.

Yeah, that was a rough watch. Very graphic.

I think that the problem is we pretend this is political, but it's not, it's inherent lack of care that is being taught in our schools, universities and in public. It's easy to forget with Kirk being killed, but we watched several people stand and do nothing while a young woman bled out in front of them. The political volience is just the end result of a society that has been taught that they are no more than animals with no real purpose. Our media, video games and movies are filled with not just violence, but gore and torture. Then somehow, we are shocked when people begin to act all this out.

This is really just the beginning sadly.

Unfortunately, I believe you are spot on. I would also add that, back in the 60's, the push away from the nuclear family began and is compounding every decade.

I wish it was all banned.

The Tongue is the most dangerous weapon on earth. Why Bible spends so much time addressing. But its mans heart condition, that controls, dictates his tongue. The root of all our ills in society, are a result of the condition of our hearts.
Old analogy from sunday school, many of us try teach our kids, and as adults , self included forget to practice sometimes.
Take a tube toothpaste, squirt some out, then try to get the toothepaste back inside the tube. Impossible. Same with words. Once you open your yapper (keyboard) and let words out. Cant take em back. You can regret, say sorry, forgive etc. But the damage they do initially, cant be erased.

The amount of people getting fired over social media comments about his death is crazy

Maybe people will finally realize what a disaster social media is. There's a big reason I rarely post anything anymore and try to stay quiet. More people should try it
Amen, amen, amen. I'll admit, I am very angry, yet simultaneously bewildered by this whole thing and especially when I try to look into why people disliked this man so much and read things like he got what he deserved because he supported gun rights. So by that logic, if guns were to be confiscated and then a gun ban supporter dies in a bomb, should I celebrate and say they got what they deserved? I'm truly at a loss for how diseased the soul of this nation is.

I have hated social media for a very long time. And just as @NCSNOW said above, once you make yourself look like a fool (see me many times in the past) there's no fully returning from that. I could tell y'all how I'm one of the most highly respected and performing employees at my job, but all anyone remembers is the fool I made of myself online that one time (or 10).

While I've already cut out most social media from my life, I'm about ready to stop supporting any form of it personally OR professionally, which regrettably I'm the one who has modernized my office's social media efforts. I'm afraid taking such a radical (irony) stand as this will cause me significant trouble with my job, but I'm not sure I care anymore.

Most social media formats [including ones that often attract groups with certain dynamics like reddit and discord] have become breeding grounds for emboldening manipulative and unhealthy individuals looking to groom others into increasingly destructive behaviors and patterns. They also tend to attract individuals looking for validation and acknowledgment; making the attention they get all the more powerful and vulnerable to such manipulation. The vast majority [of social media] has truly turned into a cancer on our society. And, given our blind willingness to jump on board like thoughtless lemmings, we have only ourselves to blame.

As for how these people can celebrate in the face of horrible behavior, I can only point to John:19-21:

19 This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but people loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. 20 Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that their deeds will be exposed. 21 But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what they have done has been done in the sight of God.

In short; people who are lost hate the light and call what is good evil and what is evil good.

I hate this hobby and the euro.
If all the prevailing winter forecasts going straight moderate/strong Nina come true, the hate meter might need a new color scale at the top of the range.

None of this is new. The 60s and 70s were far worse than what we have going on now by every metric. These troubles ebb and flow with the economy. For people of average or below average means, the economy has sucked since the 80s.

As a side note, I'd never heard of Charlie Kirk and neither have most of the people in my orbit. Seems like he was very popular among those that spend too much time online in the political sphere. Kind of odd to see so many memorials in the "real" world.

Nina means dry and cold for us in NC/SC though. Perfect snow making weather at least when it's low teens at night.

Yeah it's hard to enjoy this hobby when you can't read a weather post without everyone acting like this weather has never happened before 🙄 or surprised we're still hot in mid September and forgets last year when it was 90 degrees a week before Halloween. Like I've only been here 4 years and people who lived here their whole lives is acting surprised by our weather. Very little surprises me anymore

Also forgetting the fact the summer was a piece of cake here. It won't get any easier than this year

The issue is this is just getting started. People of the age of myself who were desensitized to the volience and gore of the dawn of video games and CGI are just beginning to have kids get into the teen to twenty something age range, much less those after me who have seen much worse.

I would like to see some date for this. The political polarization I can certainly buy with the Vietnam war going on. However, I find hippies a touch milder than what I would call the leftist movement of today.

Im not sure I buy you’ve never heard of Charlie Kirk, though you’re certainly welcome to make that claim about you and your orbit. I’m not sure what defines spending to much time in the political sphere encompasses, but my general sense that would include a 22 year old kid engulfed in discord who just assassinated a very popular political campaigner and debater, who also built a multimillion dollar company. I don’t particularly enjoy watching debates with political activists and ignorant college students, but the guy was everywhere.

Yeah the craziest thing to me has been the tributes from Europe and Asia and even the mideast about him... You don't see that with just anyone
