Misc Member Location Map

PITA post -

We need to set the default size of the map to include the SE and not the whole US (or world); I reset but it keeps defaulting back to a whole US view (sometimes world); maybe the "author" or "owner" (SD???) can set the default size? There is a gear box up in the right corner of the white dialogue box(?).

That's a new development - wasn't like that a couple of hours ago. Who's been messing with the default map view? Staff?? ;)

I think when new folks sign on it defaults back to the world unless there is a parameter set by the creator of the original map ... I'm sure staff isn't playing trick or treat! But I'm equally sure the cure is with the "owner"!

Thank you, I was just wondering. Usually I'm good with computer stuff but I was unsure this time.
Only thing seems to be that you are on a different layer somehow. Also, some markings don't have names, only point 8 or point 11. Naming points was somewhat weird for me, so maybe some got confused.

GaGirl - You put yourself in an untitled layer - delete and redo so you're in the list! Someone else (2 folks) is/are "Point" and need(s) to do likewise (and name yourselves before finishing!)

Might as well move this over here to make things easier to find. Basically, once you are logged into your google account:
1. Click on the red snowflake in NC (SD's location)
2. Find your location on the map
3. Click on the marker icon up near the search bar
4. Click your location. A box should pop up like the one below
5. Type your name in the place where the point is

And then you should be on the map. :)

I think I'm under the members list now on that, so we'll see if it stays.

And I don't mind having to zoom in. One of my favorite things to do to pass the time in the past was to look at stuff on Google Maps.

Are folks putting their actual addresses in here as opposed to just their cities? I see addresses.

I thought Met was in RR. It's showing near Oxford.

Unless it's moved if you zoom in you can see its just south of RR or maybe I didn't want to put it in exact spot....might be some crazies on here. Lol

Good point - will non-members be able to see the map?

I'd advise folks to put landmarks near their physical home addresses for safety reasons if this isn't already being done.

The internet is an odd place and you never want to get a stalker/foe finding out your true place of residence. For instance if I live a few miles from a -- station I may pick that, or a few miles from a lake put your location in the center of the lake. That way we get a 5-10mi approximation and really that's all we need.

I'll work on it. It keeps changing the default on me.

Agreed. I picked a couple miles down the street. I guess I should have put that in the original post

Not that this helps or makes anyone feel better but map or not, address or not unfortunately we can be found by anyone that has access to the Internet. It's the world we live in

Was thinking the same thing when I set mine - put "far NW quadrant Gainesville" - which is pretty oblique.

True, but it's whether or not you want to hand it over on a silver platter or make them struggle a bit.

Yeah we need to figure out how to remove the planned point a to point b trip
